New Gerry Adams mural is painted in west Belfast as Sinn Fein president remains held over Jean McConville murder (Belfast Telegraph)

A mural of Sinn Fein Leader Gerry Adams is painted on a wall on the Falls Road, Belfast as police are granted a further 48 hours to question him about the murder of mother-of-10 Jean McConville.

The artwork on the Falls Road shows Mr Adams beside the words “peacemaker, leader, visionary”.

Meanwhile, PSNI detectives are still quizzing Adams in Antrim police station about the IRA abduction and murder of west Belfast mother-of-10 Jean McConville in 1972.

With the initial 48-hour deadline looming for officers to either charge or release Mr Adams after his arrest on Wednesday night, police are applying for an extension, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has said.

Adams, 65, who vehemently denies allegations levelled by former republican colleagues that he ordered Mrs McConville’s murder and secret burial, now faces a third night in custody at Antrim police station.

The mural has been met with mixed reaction online.
