La compagna della giornalista uccisa Lyra McKee ha abbandonato un’animata discussione dopo che un ex prigioniero dell’IRA ha sostenuto che Saoradh avrebbe dovuto essere invitato
Saoradh viene considerato l’ala politica della New IRA, che lo scorso aprile ha ammesso la propria responsabilità nell’uccisione di Lyra McKee. La giornalista 29enne è stata colpita a morte da un proiettile durante gli scontri tra PSNI e nazionalisti, a Creggan (Derry) il 18 aprile scorso.
Michael Culbert, direttore dell’organismo repubblicano di sostegno agli ex detenuti, Coiste Na nIarchimi, ha parlato durante l’evento “Having Difficult Conversations” presso il Glor Dhun Geimhin Center di Dungiven. Un meeting parte del programma della Lyra’s Walk.
Parlando al pubblico – che includeva la sorella di Lyra, Nichola Corner e la compagna Sara Canning – Culbert, che scontò una condanna a 15 anni nel Maze per l’omicidio di un poliziotto, ha affermato che sarebbe stato giusto Saoradh fosse stato invitato a partecipare.
Culbert ha detto di non avere “rimpianti” e di aver “chiesto il perdono di nessuno” per le sue azioni passate.
“Personalmente mi avrebbe fatto piacere che (Saoradh) fosse stato qui perché avrei potuto esprimere la mia logica e la mia opinione su quello che sta facendo”, ha detto.
“Queste sono le conversazioni difficili da avere: far sì che queste persone spieghino quello che stanno facendo e quale sia la loro strategia”.
Sara Canning, compagna di Lyra, è uscita dalla stanza con tre amici mentre Culbert stava parlando. Sono rientrati dopo 10 minuti, quando William Ennis, un amico della McKee, ha contestato Culbert.
“Potrebbe essere questo il motivo per cui i giovani di Creggan e forse altrove si giovano del fatto di poter impugnare delle pistole: il fatto che ad eventi del panel arrivino persone coinvolte nel conflitto del passato e che impiegano gran parte del loro intervento cercando di vantarsi della loro legittimità?” ha chiesto.
Le osservazioni di Ennis sono state accolte da un forte applauso da parte degli amici della Canning e della McKee.
La sorella di Lyra ha poi concluso la serata ringraziando coloro che sono stati “abbastanza coraggiosi da ascoltare queste complicate conversazioni”.
“Ci sono state molte conversazioni difficili qui questa sera e sono state condivise molte storie difficili”, ha detto. “Ma so che Lyra avrebbe rispettato ogni singola storia, forse non sarebbe d’accordo con tutto quello che è stato detto, ma sicuramente avrebbe rispettato il punto di vista di tutti”.
