Derry rocked by two bomb attacks (Derry Journal)
A major security operation is continuing in Derry this morning after two bombs exploded in the city centre on Thursday evening.
The first bomb exploded at 8:44pm outside the city’s tourist office on Foyle Street.
The second bomb went off four minutes later outside the city council offices on Strand Road.
Police say they received a warning at 7:33pm and a further warning at 7:47pm.
A number of homes – including elderly residents of sheltered housing accommodation in Bridge Street – and businesses were evacuated.
No one was injured in either explosion.
PSNI District Commander Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin said the bombers were “cowardly and callous.”
“The reckless acts of those who planted these devices stand in stark contrast to those of the brave officers who entered these areas to evacuate local residents and businesses,” he said.
“The people of Derry do not want this disruption. It is cowardly and callous.”
The attacks have been widely condemned.
Sinn Fein’s Martina Anderson said there “are no words of condemnation that have not been used on previous occasions.”
“Once more we have seen the mindless actions of organisations that command miniscule support disrupting citizens lives,” she added.
SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey said he was “absolutely infuriated” by the bomb attacks.
“Those who carried out these heinous acts have succeeded only in strengthening the resolve of us all that we will work collectively to act for the positive future of this city and its citizens.”
Much of the city centre remains closed off this morning.
