In contrapposizione ai 4000 reati minori in registrato nel corso degli ultimi 12 mesi rispetto all’anno precedente, gli attentati attribuiti ai dissidenti repubblicani sono pressochè raddoppiati

Police Service of Northern Ireland con cifre alla mano. Lo scorso anno sono stati contati quasi cento allarmi bomba in Irlanda del Nord,  che riflettono il forte aumento dell’attività dissidente repubblicani. Ufficiali PSNI e esperti artificieri hanno affrontato 99 segnalazioni inerenti a dispositivi sospetti nel 2010/11, alcuni dei quali esplosi.
Il totale è quasi il doppio dei  50 incidenti dell’anno precedente. Una risposta attiva della polizia alla minaccia dei repubblicani ha portato nel corso dell’ultimo anno all’arresto di 188 persone per reati di terrorismo, con un incremento di 169 rispetto all’anno prima.
Un totale di 40 persone sono state successivamente incriminate, rispetto alle 36 dei 12 mesi precedenti. Chief Constable Matt Baggott ha detto che nonostante le condizioni di sicurezza molto difficili in cui gli ufficiali lavorano, le forze di polizia sono  comunque state in grado di garantire una riduzione del numero  complessivo dei reati registrati, così come è aumentato il numero dei rilevamenti.
“Nonostante le sfide che abbiamo di fronte, la polizia sta lavorando,” ha detto.  “Noi siamo soddisfatti. La crescente minaccia non ha avuto alcun effetto sullo stile e lo svolgimento del nostro servizio in tutti i settori, siamo determinati a lottare contro la criminalità e ad affrontare i problemi che la comunità ci chiede di affrontare “, ha aggiunto.
Le forze di sicurezza stanno operando in condizioni di massima allerta, mettendo a segno operazioni contro i dissidenti repubblicani ad emtrambo i lati del confine.
I dati resi noti dalla PSNI non menzionano il recente omicidio della’ agente Ronan Kerr a Omagh.
Nel corso dell’anno preso in analisi, si è registrata anche  l’uccisione del lealista di Bobby Moffett a colpi di arma da fuoco avvenuta a Belfast ( Shankill Road ) l’estate scorsa.
Nonostante l’aumento degli incidenti in materia di sicurezza, gli scontri a fuoco sono diminuiti.
Ci sono stati 72 scontri a fuoco nel corso dell’anno passato, sette in meno dell’anno prima.
Gli attacchi in stile paramilitare sono anch’essi diminuiti.
Nello scorso dell’ anno 33 sono state bersaglio di colpi di arma da fuoco in attacchi di stile paramilitare, contro le 46 dell’anno precedente, e 50 persone sono state aggredite, contro  le 81 dell’anno precedente.

Almost 100 bombing incidents occurred in Northern Ireland in the past year, reflecting the upsurge in dissident republican activity.
PSNI officers and bomb disposal experts dealt with 99 alerts involving a viable device in 2010/11, a number of which exploded.
The total is almost double the 50 incidents the previous year.
A proactive police response to dissident republican activity led to the arrest of 188 people for terrorist offences over the past financial year, an increase from 169 the previous year.
A total of 40 people were subsequently charged, compared to 36 the year before.
Chief Constable Matt Baggott said that despite the very difficult security environment in which officers work, the force has still been able to ensure a decrease in the number of overall crimes recorded as well as an increase in the detection rate.
“Despite the challenges we face, policing is working,” he said.
“But we are not complacent and while the increased threat does impact upon the style and delivery of our service in some areas, we are determined that it will not prevent us working with people to tackle crime and deal with the issues that they want us to deal with,” he added. The crime figures released by the PSNI do not cover the recent murder of Constable Ronan Kerr in Omagh in April.
In the 12-month period analysed, there was one security-related death — the loyalist shooting of Bobby |Moffett on Belfast’s Shankill Road last summer.
There were two security-related deaths the year before.
Despite the increase in security incidents, shootings have decreased.
There were 72 shooting incidents in the past year, seven less than the year before.
Paramilitary-style attacks have also decreased.
In the past year 33 people were shot in a paramilitary-style |attack, compared to 46 the year before, and 50 people were attacked compared to 81 the previous year.
