STRAGE DI MASSEREENE, COMINCIA IL NUOVO PROCESSO

Shivers in court over Massereene re-trial (UTV)

Brian Shivers, who is 47 and from Magherafelt, is charged with killing Sappers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar at the Co Antrim army base in March 2009.

He denies murder and six counts of attempted murder.

The soldiers – 23-year-old Quinsey and 21-year-old Azimkar – were gunned down by the Real IRA as they collected pizza at the gates of Massereene just hours before they were due to be deployed to Afghanistan. Two other soldiers and two pizza delivery men were hurt.

As the diplock trial opened at Belfast Crown Court on Monday, CCTV footage was played showing two gunmen open fire at five soldiers who frantically sought cover.

The prosecution QC said the attack was planned well in advance.

Sixty-five bullets were fired at the “defenceless” soldiers who were targeted individually. The gunmen reloaded and continued to fire at the helpless victims as they lay on the ground.

This, the prosecution said, was an attempt at mass murder. The trial continues.
