CASO FINUCANE. AVVOCATO DETERMINATO A STABILIRE LA VERITA’ SULL’OMICIDIO
Finucane review QC to ‘uncover truth’ (UTV)
The lawyer who will lead the review into state involvement in the murder of solicitor Pat Finucane has said he is determined to uncover the truth about the killing.
Mr Finucane was gunned down by loyalist paramilitaries in front of his wife and children in his north Belfast home in 1989.
Family members, who campaigned for a public inquiry to be held into allegations of collusion between the killers and security forces, were told last month during a meeting with Prime Minister David Cameron and Secretary of State Owen Paterson in London that a review would be held instead.
The Finucane family have said they will not take part in the review, however on Thursday QC Sir Desmond De Silva said he was determined to expose the truth.
“I am determined to expose the truth about this appalling murder. I know from my work internationally over many years that it is only when the truth is fully exposed that communities can put the trauma of conflict behind them to secure a lasting peace,” said the QC.
As part of its terms of reference Mr De Silva has said he will publish a full public account of any involvement by the Army, the RUC, the Security Service or any other UK Government body in the murder of Mr Finucane.
“Naturally, I will be applying the key principles of independence, thoroughness and impartiality in carrying out my work. The Government may have set my remit but it is now for me to take the task forward independently,” he said.
Mr De Silva said in the interests of transparency he intends to declassify and publish original intelligence documents alongside the report.
