A press photographer has been shot during a second night of rioting in east Belfast involving up to 700 people.
Three rounds were fired and the man, who is working for the Press Association, has been taken to hospital for treatment after he was struck in the right leg at around midnight at the bottom of the Newtownards Road.
Police said the extent of his injuries are not known at this stage.
There are unconfirmed reports that the bullet was fired from the Short Strand.
Crowds gathered in the Short Strand and lower Newtownards Road areas of the city on Tuesday evening and began throwing bricks, bottles and petrol bombs – with two men suffering burn injuries.
A massive police operation swung into action with around 50 landrovers blockading Castlereagh Street and two water cannons deployed. A number of baton rounds have been fired.
Youths have attacked PSNI vehicles, throwing wheelie bins at them. One armoured vehicle had to back away after being smashed by a man armed with a mallet.
Police said the Albertbridge Road and Templemore Road are now closed and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
UTV reporter Aideen Kennedy, who was at the scene, said the trouble started at around 9pm.
“There were missiles, including golf balls, coming from the Short Strand area and they landed at the feet of people in the lower Newtownards Road,” she said.
“Then suddenly about 200 men in balaclavas came from the Lower Newtownards Road and started throwing bricks, fireworks and stones at police and into the Short Strand.
“There’s a massive police presence trying to stop the trouble.”
The violence comes after around 500 loyalists and nationalists rioters clashed in the area on Monday night.
Two men remain in hospital with gunshot wounds to the legs after 11 shots were fired. Another man suffered a fractured skull after he was hit by a concrete block.
The First and Deputy First Ministers have met with the PSNI Chief Constable and the Justice Minister to discuss how the matter should be handled.
