ALLARME A KILKEEL.

Viable device found under officer’s car (U TV)

Police have confirmed that a ‘viable device’ has been found outside the home of a policewoman in Kilkeel, County Down.
The officer – who is believed to be aged in her late twenties – is the niece of a former Sinn Fein councilor.
Martin Connolly left the party in 2007 over his support for the PSNI.
He is now an independent Republican councillor.
Councillor Connolly told UTV he did not want to comment about who may have been behind the security alert.
“I am not going to get into the politics of condemnation – it has done nothing in the past and it will do nothing in the future.
“Let’s deal with facts and the facts are that while there is British occupation on this island, there will always be opposition to it,” he told UTV.
A number of houses were evacuated in the Fearon Close area, off the Scrogg Road, in Kilkeel, on Saturday as the army and police dealt with the bomb scare.
PSNI Superintendent Barbara Gray said it was a cowardly attack.
“This device was designed for one purpose – to kill and injure. We are fortunate that we are not dealing with a murder.
“This attack was foiled due to the vigilance of this officer.
“The aim of these attacks is to disrupt and damage the service we provide. We will not be deterred from policing our communities and making them safer,” she added.
DUP MLA for the Jim Wells believes the attack bears the hallmarks of a dissident republican operation.
“This is the first time there has been any terrorist activity in Kilkeel for many years and of course this brings back memories to a community which has suffered greatly at the hands of terrorists.”
