IL KILLER DI GREYSTEEL TORNA IN CARCERE
Torrens Knight è stato arrestato a Coleraine e rispedito in carcere
Il Segretario di Stato Shaun Woodward è giunto ad una decisione in merito alla sorte di Torrens Knight.
Egli era stato condannato per 12 omicidi di stampo terroristico durante i Troubles, tra cui quelli di otto persone vittime della sanguinosa strage di Greysteel nel 1993.
Sospensione della licenza di libertà ottenuta nel 2000 in base ai principi stabiliti dal Good Friday Agreement. Knight, ex membro dell’Ulster Freedom Fighters, fino a quel momento aveva scontato 7 anni della sua condanna.
Shaun Woodward ha motivato la sua decisione dicendo: “Io non esiterò ad agire per sospendere la licenza di ogni detenuto che è stato rilasciato in regime di liberazione anticipata secondo il Sentences Act, introdotto con la firma dell’Accordo del Venerdì Santo, qualora, con le loro azioni, essi dimostrano di essere diventati un pericolo per la pubblico “.
“La mia priorità è la sicurezza dei cittadini e nell’interesse della comunità in generale. Non posso consentire la libertà di alcun individuo che abbia l’intento di abusare della possibilità data loro di beneficiare del regime di liberazione anticipata”, ha aggiunto.
Torrens Kinght, 40 anni, è stato arrestato poco prima delle 19 del 27 ottobre ed immediatamente trasferito presso il carcere di massima sicurezza di Maghaberry.
I suoi avvocati hanno annunciato il ricorso.
Greysteel killer returns to jail (U TV)
Notorious loyalist killer Torrens Knight has been re-arrested in Coleraine and sent back to jail, UTV can reveal.
Knight, who was behind 12 killings at Greysteel and Castlerock in 1993, was found guilty last week of assaulting two sisters in Coleraine.
Following his conviction, Secretary of State Shaun Woodward suspended his early release licence on Tuesday evening.
The loyalist killer was released in 2000 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.
“I will not hesitate to act to suspend the licence of any prisoner who was released under the Sentences Act early release scheme, introduced following the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, if, by their actions, they prove they have become a danger to the public”, Mr Woodward said on Tuesday evening.
“My priority is public safety and in the interests of the community at large. I cannot permit freedom to any individual intent on abusing the opportunity they have been given to benefit from the early release scheme,” he added.
Knight, 40, was arrested just before 7pm and returned to Maghaberry prison.
He was convicted of 12 terrorist murders during the Troubles, including those of eight people in the infamous Greysteel massacre.
He was a member of the Ulster Freedom Fighters gang that burst into the Rising Sun bar in the Co Londonderry village on Halloween in 1993 and opened fire.
Following his conviction on two counts of assault and one of disorderly behaviour last Thursday, East Londonderry SDLP MLA John Dallat had called for his early release licence to be rescinded as soon as possible.
Knight is to appeal against his conviction, his solicitor said last week.
