HMP Magheraberry: McCartney welcomes renewed focus Maghaberry problems (Derry Journal)
Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed a renewed focus on dealing with difficulties in Roe House in Maghaberry prison.
Speaking after the publication of an independent assessment into conditions in Roe House, Maghaberry, Mr McCartney said:“This review is welcome and contains a number of measures to improve the situation in Roe House.
“I welcome a more focused approach to dealing with the issue of full body searches, relaxations on controlled movement and a review of education provision for prisoners.
“In all our dealings on this issue Sinn Féin has always made it clear that prisoners should be treated with dignity and respect.
“The August 2010 agreement provided a template to support that position.
“We see this review as a reinvigoration of that.
“It reinforces the principle that everyone; prisoners, their family members and prison staff have the right to live their lives in an environment free from hostility.”
