Security stepped up after gun attacks (UTV)

The police are warning that security will be stepped up in Belfast after two attempts by dissidents to murder officers in the city.

A patrol car was hit by two bullets in Suffolk on Friday night and the previous evening, 10 shots were fired at police land rovers from a Kalashnikov rifle in the Ardoyne area. No-one was hurt in the incidents.

On Monday night, police confirmed that two Kalashnikov rifles had been retrieved and are currently undergoing forensic tests.

Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris said: “These attacks are set out with murderous intent, the intent is to kill so, where that does not happen, obviously we have been fortunate.

“But again I would emphasis our part is to prevent these attacks with the assistance of the public and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

People will see extra police out on the ground, there will be an increased visibility of police but also they should be assured in the effort that is going into investigating these crimes.

“The threat is regarded to being severe – the Chief Constable has already set out that we will be heightening our profile in our cities and towns right across Northern Ireland and that is to ensure people that we are there to protect them not only from terrorism but other serious criminality.”

Dissident republicans were blamed for Thursday’s attack in which three police vehicles were struck by a number of shots on the Crumlin Road, near Brompton Park.

A 34-year-old man was detained by police on Sunday, taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite for questioning, and was later released unconditionally.

In a statement the PSNI renewed its appeal for information.

A spokesman added: “Police would like to reiterate their appeal for anyone who noticed the movements of a silver Volkswagen Passat, registration number ICZ 9780, between 5pm and 7pm on Thursday evening in the Ardoyne area, to contact them.”

Officers also asked anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the Butler Walk, Butler Place, Brompton Park or Herbert Street areas to get in touch on 0845 600 8000.
