New republican mural unveiled (NewsLetter)

A new republican mural was unveiled at the Lecky Road on Easter Sunday.

The mural, which commemorates IRA members from the area who died during the Troubles, was unveiled by Derry Sinn Féin chairperson, Andrew McCartney.

Around 100 people attended the unveiling, including a number of relatives of IRA members who were killed.

Sinn Féin councillor Collie Kelly, who chaired the unveiling, thanked those who came along.

“We would like to thank everyone for coming here this afternoon for this ceremony to unveil a new mural dedicated to the memory of IRA volunteers from the Bogside and Brandywell areas,” he said.

He also thanked members of the local community in the Brandywell who raised funds for the mural. “We would like to thank the artist Paddy Nelis and the people of the local area who helped raise funds so this mural could be completed,” he said.
