Derry officer’s parents targeted by bomb (UTV)
The elderly parents of a serving PSNI officer are believed to have been the target of a viable under-car bomb attack in Londonderry on Sunday night.
Dissident republicans are being blamed for the planting of an explosive device under a car which was parked outside the couple’s home in the Drumleck Drive area of Shantallow.
The bomb squad was called to the scene shortly after 11pm and residents were evacuated while the device was made safe and taken away for further examination.
“It’s a cowardly attack – absolute insanity, reckless in the extreme,” PSNI Superintendent Chris Yates said.
“That device when it exploded could have caught anyone up in the blast and seriously injured them.”
It’s not the first time the family has been targeted, as a pipe bomb exploded outside their home two years ago.
Local SDLP councillor Shaun Gallagher has said those responsible are an “absolute disgrace”.
“They left the device in a built-up area. Terrace houses, up beside the chapel – a very popular area with a lot of people about,” he added.
“They don’t give one toot about the people that they’re claiming to be representing.
Residents have since been allowed back in their homes, but investigations into the bomb attack are continuing.
Policing Board Chair Brian Rea has condemned those responsible for planting the bomb.
“The sense of community outrage shows that those responsible for leaving this device are completely out of touch with the community majority,” he said.
“We are thankful that the device was found in time, but our thoughts are with the officer’s family and the people living close by who have been subjected to a most terrifying incident.”
On Easter Monday, a masked spokesman for the organisation Óglaigh na hÉireann addressed a rally at Derry’s Creggan cemetery and warned that attacks against “Crown forces and British interests” would continue.
