Elliott: Republican flags “causing tension” in Kilmacormick (Impartial Reporter)
Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott has hit out at the erection of Republican flags in the Kilmacormick area of Enniskillen, saying they are “undermining the area and creating division”.
“Many people view them as an attempt to claim that part of the town for a single tradition, when that really isn’t the case. Not only are there many people living in the area who are not Republican, but the road itself is used by thousands of people commuting to work or visiting the Erne Hospital each and every day,” said Mr. Elliott.
He explained that a number of people have contacted his office to complain about the tri-colours and Erin Go Bragh flags appearing in the town and added: “Many people in Fermanagh and indeed throughout Northern Ireland cannot even erect the Union flag on their hall or property as it would be removed, stolen or result with their property being damaged”.
Mr. Elliott ended his statement by calling for the flags to be removed.
“Some people have said to me that the flags are not only creating tension within the community but are also putting them off stopping with businesses along the road that could undoubtedly benefit from the passing trade. This is why I would strongly urge those who erected the flags to remove them as they are undermining the area, damaging business and creating division within the town when it is totally unnecessary,” he said.
