ARDOYNE. TWELFTH PARADE ‘PACIFICA’ AL PRIMO PASSAGGIO
Calls for calm ahead of Ardoyne march (UTV)
There are calls for calm ahead of an Orange Order return feeder parade which is due to pass by the Ardoyne shopfronts on Tuesday night.
Earlier, police lined the route as the morning parade passed the flashpoint.
Nationalists held a protest and held banners condemning the PSNI and Parades Commission.
The march, which started on the Upper Crumlin Road at 8am on Tuesday, took just a few minutes to pass the area.
There are concerns about the return leg of the parade on Tuesday night, as marchers make their way home from the main Belfast demonstration.
The Parades Commission has ruled that the Ligoniel True Blues band can pass the area but they cannot play music, fly flags and supporters cannot accompany the band.
“We don’t see any reason as to why the situation that we saw this morning can’t be repeated tonight,” said Winston Irvine from the loyalist North and West Belfast Parades Forum.
“This community will show disclipline and support to the Orange Order and we will try to make sure things will pass off peacefully,” he said.
Sinn Fein MLA for north Belfast Gerry Kelly said Monday night’s disturbances were created by a small number of people and he appealed for calm ahead of the return parade.
“The trouble was created mostly by people who had drink taken.
“I recognised some of them who would have been involved in torturing the community throughout the year.
“Although there were big crowds, there was a small number of people who were doing all the damage.
“People entirely reject it, whether its in west Belfast and north Belfast,” Mr Kelly said.
