Republican Sinn Féin condemns the Loyalist attack on the mainly Nationalist Short Strand area of Belfast last night that saw a mob of hundreds attempt to invade the area. We congratulate those local people that stood defiantly against the sectarian onslaught and defended their community.
These scenes are all too familiar in the Six Counties as sectarianism is rewarded and built into the political system of the partitionist assembly at Stormont. The British Government is the root cause of sectarianism in Ireland as it has deliberately divided a minority from the majority to maitain her rule. Only an Ireland free from British rule can deliver a future free from sectarianism.
In the meantime we wish the people of the Short Strand well and hope that they do not have to endure another night under siege.
