State ‘omissions’ in Nelson murder (Belfast Telegraph)
An inquiry into the murder of lawyer Rosemary Nelson has found that “omissions” by state agencies made her “more at risk and more vulnerable”, Northern Ireland Secretary Owen Paterson has said.
He told the Commons there was “no evidence of any act by or within any of the state agencies … which directly facilitated” the killing in 1999.
But the Northern Ireland Office and the Royal Ulster Constabulary “failed to take reasonable and proportionate steps” to safeguard her life.
He said: “I am profoundly sorry that omissions by the state rendered Rosemary Nelson more at risk and more vulnerable.”
