Il presidente dello Sinn Fein Gerry Adams ha fatto lunedì il suo ultimo discorso all’Assemblea, lodando  i “successi notevoli”  del power sharing in Irlanda del Nord

Lo scorso mese di giugno aveva lasciato il mondo ‘politco e non’ di stucco annunciando l’abbondono delle sue comode poltrone a Stormont e Westminster, e svelando il suo progetto di concorrere alle elezioni nella Repubblica di Irlanda per un seggio nella circoscrizione di Louth, in una mossa descritta dagli analisti come ‘make or break’. Una mossa che prendendo coscienza degli ultimi sviluppi in casa Sinn Fein in Irlanda, potrebbe trasformarsi nell’ennesimo successo della ‘sfinge’ repubblicana.
Il 62enne parlamentare di West Belfast concorrerà per un seggio nella circoscrizione di Louth, in una mossa che è stato descritta come “make or break”.
“L’Assembly si sta avvicinando alla fine del suo mandato”, ha detto. “Questo è un risultato notevole, data la difficoltà che ha dovuto superare”, ha dichiarato Adams in occasione del suo ultimo discorso all’Assembly, tenuto lunedì 6 dicembre.
“Poiché questo è il mio ultimo intervento in questa Assembly, in questa fase della mia vita, vorrei estendere i migliori auguri ai miei colleghi.
“Voglio ringraziare voi, i vostri colleghi e soprattutto il Comhairle Ceann per  il modo leale, equilibrato e inclusivo con il quale sono stati condotti gli affari in questa Assembly.”
Il discorso è stato parte di un dibattito sulla richiesta di un approccio integrato, trans-dipartimentale, ‘early years children’s strategy’ (strategia dei primi anni di vita dei bambini, ndt).
Con l’approvazione della mozione, Adams è giunto in soccorso del 40% dei bambini di West Belfast che non sono registrati con un dentista.
“La discussione odierna è un esempio dei problemi che devono essere affrontati se si vuole migliorare le condizioni di vita dei cittadini e in particolare dei nostri figli”, ha continuato. “Quindi buona fortuna a tutti voi in questo importante lavoro. Mi affido la mozione.”

Adams makes final Stormont address (UTV)
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams made his last speech to the Assembly on Monday, praising the “remarkable achievements” of power-sharing in Northern Ireland.
Mr Adams announced his plans to stand down from his Stormont and Westminster roles last month, as he prepares to run in the Republic of Ireland’s general election in the New Year.
The 62-year-old West Belfast MLA is to contest a seat in the Louth constituency, in a move which has been described as “make or break”.
In his final address to the Assembly, Mr Adams spoke of the achievements of the power-sharing institutions which – come the elections next May – will have survived a full four year term for the first time.
“The Assembly is approaching the end of its full term,” he said. “That is a remarkable achievement given the difficulties that had to be overcome, but of course this Assembly has to be about delivering for citizens.
“As this is my last speech in this Assembly, in this phase of my life, I would also like to extend best wishes to my colleagues here.
“I want to thank you, your colleagues and especially the Ceann Comhairle for the fair, balanced and inclusive way the business of this Assembly is conducted.”
The speech was delivered during a debate over calls for an integrated, cross-departmental ‘early years children’s strategy’.
Endorsing the motion, Mr Adams said it would help a part of his west Belfast constituency where 40% of children are not registered with a dentist.
“Today’s debate is an example of the issues that must be tackled if we are to improve the living conditions of citizens and particularly our children,” he continued. “So, good luck to you all in this important work. I commend the motion.”
Former IRA hunger striker Pat Sheehan has been chosen by the party to take over the Assembly position vacated by Mr Adams.
Sinn Féin has five MPs elected in Northern Ireland, including Mr Adams. It has four members elected to the Dáil.
Mr Adams will step down at Westminster when the Irish elections are called.
