L’Historical Enquieres Team fa luce sulla morte di Bernadette Friel nel 1975 a Derry. L’ipotesi della ‘roulette russa’ fu una menzognia studiata da un ex soldato per coprire l’omicidio

Fu l’ex soldato britannico Thomas Ramsey ad affermare che la ventiduenne Bernadette Friel, rimase vittima del gioco mortale della ‘roulette russa‘ nella casa di Carnhill nel lontano ottobre di 35 anni fa.
Oggi l’Historical Enquiries Team ha sgretolato la testimonianza di Ramsey. All’epoca già il Royal Ulster Constabulary aveva consigliato che Ramsey fosse perseguito per l’accusa di omicidio colposo, anche dopo il ritrovamento di un arsenale di armi nella casa teatro della controversa morte della ragazza per il quale il soldato scontò 8 mesi di carcere.
Stando ai risultati delle nuove indagini, Thomas Ramsey aveva organizzato la ‘Roulette Russa’ ad hoc per mascherare l’omicidio che di lì a poco si sarebbe consumato.
L’HET ha concluso che la RUC aveva il diritto di raccomandare che l’ex soldato venisse perseguito per omicidio.
Il parlamentare Mark Durkan ha commentato i risultati dell’indagine sostenendo che ha portato alla luce “la verità che la famiglia Friel ha sempre saputo” ed ha aggiunto”La famiglia Friel non solo è stata derubata della vita di Bernadette, ma è stata anche ferita e frustrata dalle menzogne che hanno loro negato la giustizia dovuta.

Soldier lied about ‘Russian Roulette’ killing – HET (U TV)
Claims a Londonderry woman died playing a game of Russian Roulette 35 years ago were lies fabricated by the former soldier who shot her, the Historical Enquiries Team has said.
Englishman Thomas Ramsey claimed 22-year-old Bernadette Friel, from the city’s Bogside, shot herself in his Carnhill home during the deadly game in October 1975.
While police had found an arsenal of weapons in the property and Senior RUC commanders recommended that Ramsey be prosecuted for murder, after his claims he was charged with the lesser offense of manslaughter.
He served eight months in jail.
Following an investigation into the circumstances of Ms Friel’s death, the HET released details of their findings on Monday.
According to the report, Ramsey fabricated the Russian Roulette story, having deliberately shot Ms Friel himself and then lied to the police.
The HET concluded that the RUC was right to recommend the former soldier be prosecuted for murder.
The findings still leave questions for the victim’s family unanswered, 35 years after their loved one’s killing. They want to know why Ramsey never faced a murder charge, despite the recommendations made.
Foyle MP Mark Durkan said the HET report showed “the truth which the Friel family have always known”.
He added: “The Friel family are not only robbed of Bernadette’s life but were also hurt and frustrated by the lies which denied them due justice.
“They suffered grievance on top of grief because a murderer lied and the prosecuting authorities wobbled.”
