MAGHABERRY.
Prisoners throw urine in dirty protest (U TV)
Protective clothing has been given to prison officers working at Maghaberry jail after urine was thrown at them by inmates during a “dirty protest.”
The Northern Ireland Prison Service said around 30 dissident republicans are involved in the protest, which has been going on for three months.
In a statement, the Prison Service said inmates were “fouling areas of their living accommodation by pouring urine, sometimes mixed with excrement, onto landings.”
The inmates say their demonstration is about prison conditions, including to what extent they are allowed to associate with each other.
Two complaints are being investigated by the Prison Ombudsman.
