Kate Carroll travolta da una tempesta settaria nel tentativo di raccogliere fondi per finanziare un prossimo viaggio negli Stati Uniti

Kate Carroll, vedova di Stephen Carroll assassinato dal Continuity IRA nel marzo 2009, non è la sola ad essere al centro di un caso di settarismo sui generis. Ad esserne coinvolto è anche Peadar Heffron, agente della PSNI rimasto gravemente ferito nell’attentato del 8 gennaio scorso.
Entrambi, insieme ad un accompagnatore ciascuno, sono stati invitati a presenziare ad un torneo biennale dei GAA ospitato dal New York Police Department (NYPD) nell’ottobre prossimo.
L’episodio di settarismo si è manifestato con la raccolta fondi per il viaggio che li porterà a New York per 10 giorni circa.
Molte persone si sono infatti rifiutare di sottoscrivere un modulo di sponsorizzazione in cui è presente il logo della PSNI affiancato a quello del GAA.
“E’ ridicolo. Questo mi ha lasciato in lacrime “, ha detto Kate.
“La gente di una parte della comunità non lo vuole firmare, perché cita la PSNI e alcuni dell’altra parte si rifiutano di partecipare a causa del logo GAA”.
“Altri hanno donato molto volentieri – e sanno chi sono. Ma mi sono sentito totalmente disillusa da quelli che non vogliono sapere, e mi ha molto turbato.
“La maggior parte delle popolazione locale è stata così così d’aiuto e di sostegno dopo la morte di Steve, ed è un peccato che si sia insinuato un elemento settario in tutto ciò.”
Kate ha poi aggiunto: “Non è stata nemmeno la mancanza di rispetto nei confronti di Steve che mi ha infastidito di più. I due emblemi lì insieme, sullo stesso pezzo di carta, starebbeo a significare la storia in corso “.
Con l’occasione, la vedova Carroll ha rivelato di aver ricevuto una lettera dal Segretario di Stato degli Stati Uniti, Hillary Clinton, che recita: “Come sapete, ho avuto l’onore di favorire i negoziati e di promuovere la pace durante la mia presidenza, e sono contenta di vedere che i cittadini si sono pronunciati contro il terrorismo e la violenza. I vostri contributi sono un tributo straordinario alla memoria di tuo marito, e spero che continuerete questo lavoro importante “.
Kate Carroll, nella speranza di raccogliere i fondi necessari al viaggio (10.000 sterline), premierà il miglior giocatore del torneo con il Stephen Carroll Memorial Trophy.
Kate è fortemente coinvolta nell’associazione transcomunitaria Parents And Kids Together (PAKT), che ha istituito ‘Not in My Name’ dopo la morte del marito Stephen, con lo scopo di promuovere su vasta scala una sorta di cooperazione inter-religiosa.

PSNI widow Kate Carroll has been caught up in a sectarian storm while fundraising for a forthcoming trip to America.
Mrs Carroll, wife of the first – a PSNI officer murdered by paramilitaries, had been organising a visit to New York, hopefully along with car bomb victim Constable Peadar Heffron and his wife Fiona.
The party have been invited to attend a bi-annual GAA tournament hosted by the New York Police Department (NYPD) in October of next year.
But the fundraising effort has been hampered by people refusing to sign the sponsor form — because it carries both the PSNI and GAA logos.
“It’s ridiculous. This has left me in tears,” said Kate, whose husband Stephen was shot by the Continuity IRA in Craigavon last March.
“People from one side of the community won’t touch it because it mentions the PSNI and some on the other side refuse to get involved because of the GAA logo.
“Others have given quite willingly — and they know who they are. But I’ve felt totally disillusioned by those who don’t want to know and it has upset me a lot.
“Most local people have been so helpful and supportive since Steve’s death and it’s a pity a sectarian element has crept into this.”
She added: “It wasn’t even the disrespect towards Steve that bothered me the most. The two emblems there together on the same piece of paper would have meant history being made.”
Mrs Carroll also revealed that former US President Bill Clinton wrote her a letter praising her efforts to promote peace within the community.
It read: “As you know, I was honoured to help advance peace negotiations during my Presidency, and I’m glad to see that citizens are speaking out against terrorism and violence. Your contributions are a remarkable tribute to the memory of your husband, and I hope you’ll continue this important work.”
Meanwhile, Constable Heffron (34) is continuing his recovery after losing a leg after a bomb exploded under his car five months ago, on January 8.
The former captain of the PSNI’s GAA team, and a fluent Irish speaker, was targeted by Oglaigh na hEireann assassins, but miraculously survived.
After spending many weeks in intensive care, he is continuing to recuperate in hospital. The brave policeman and his wife have said health concerns will determine whether he can make the journey.
Mrs Carroll — who hopes to raise £10,000 for the US trip — will present the Stephen Carroll Memorial Trophy to the man of the match following the GAA tournament.
She is now heavily involved in cross-community group Parents And Kids Together (PAKT), which established ‘Not in My Name’ after her husband’s murder and aims to promote wide-spread inter-religious co-operation.
