Colpi di arma da fuoco sparati contro gli agenti di polizia accorsi presso la linea ferroviaria nell’area di Newry

L’allerta scattata nelle vicinanze di Newry nel tratto ferroviario tra Killeen e Meigh, potrebbe essere stato un tentativo di attirare in una trappola gli agenti di polizia accorsi per investigare sulla natura di un dispositivo sospetto rinvenuto nella giornata di venerdì.
Ad alimentare i sospetti sono stati i colpi di arma da fuoco sparati contro i poliziotti alle 21.15 circa di sabato sera.
Il Police Service of Northern Ireland ha condannato l’attentato in un comunicato emesso dal sovraintendente capo Alisdair Robinson: “Questo attacco è stato un tentativo vile di uccidere gli agenti di polizia nel corso del loro dovere per indagare su un oggetto sospetto, che poteva avere il potenziale di uccidere o di arrecare pregiudizio non solo alla polizia ma ai membri della comunità locale”.
“La polizia continuerà a fornire un servizio alla comunità, nonostante la minaccia di questi terroristi, criminali, ma dobbiamo anche essere consapevoli di questa minaccia”, ha aggiunto.
“Le persone responsabili di questi atti insensati mostrano un totale disprezzo per il loro prossimo e non fanno parte della società in cui la maggioranza della popolazione dell’Irlanda del Nord desidera di vivere”, ha continuato.
Dominic Bradley (SDLP) è convinto che l’attentato sia responsabilità dei dissidenti repubblicani.
“Sembra certo, come il dispositivo presso la linea ferroviaria sia stato un tentativo di attirare gli ufficiali e di attaccarli sparando contro di loro”.
“Tutti noi dobbiamo tenere i nervi saldi in queste circostanze e permettere alla polizia di fare il proprio lavoro. Penso che il mezzo principale per sconfiggere queste persone, è attraverso una stretta cooperazione tra la comunità locale e le forze di polizia”.
Altri allarmi si sono susseguiti anche per tutta la giornata di sabato. E’ stata effettuata un’esplosione controllata di un dispositivo, giudicato di pericolosità vitale, scoperto in un parcheggio a Magherafelt, contea di Derry.

Shots fired at police during Newry alert (U TV)
Shots were fired at police attending the ongoing security alert in Newry on Saturday night.
A number of officers have been at the scene after a suspicious object was discovered near the railway line between Killeen and Meigh on Friday.
It is understood the gun attack happened around 9.15pm.
There were no reports of any injuries.
In a statement from police, District Commander Chief Superintendent Alisdair Robinson condemned the attack and said:
“This attack was a cowardly attempt to kill police officers in the course of their duty as they investigate a suspicious object that may have the potential to kill or injury not only police but members of the local community”
“Police will continue to deliver a service to the community despite the threat from these criminal terrorists, but we must also be mindful of that threat,” he added.
“The people who carry out these senseless acts show a total disregard for their fellow man and are not part of the society within which the majority of people of Northern Ireland wish to live,” he continued.
SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley believes dissident republicans are behind this latest attack.
“It certainly looks like the device at the railway line was an attempt to lure officers in and attack them by shooting at them,” he said.
“All of us must hold our nerve under these circumstances and allow police to do their work. I think the main way of defeating these people is through close co-operation between the local community and the police force,” he added.
A controlled explosion was carried out on what was described as a viable explosive device discovered in a car park in Magherafelt, Co Londonderry, on Saturday.
On Friday, multiple alerts caused widespread disruption across Londonderry, Ballymena, Newry and Belfast.
