Republican given guard of honour (Belfast Telegraph)
Dissidents formed a “guard of honour” before the funeral of a republican in Northern Ireland.
Six men in black berets and gloves lined up silently as Jim Gallagher’s coffin was placed on a plinth and draped in the Irish tricolour in the heart of Londonderry’s republican Bogside.
Mr Gallagher, who was interned by the security forces during the 1970s, was involved with splinter group the Republican Network for Unity. He died suddenly at the weekend.
His remains, with black gloves on top of the coffin, were carried from his Cable Street home through the streets of the Bogside past murals depicting Northern Ireland’s conflict history, including one of a H-Block which was used to imprison suspects.
He was taken for Requiem Mass at St Columba’s church in the city.
On Tuesday three masked gunmen fired shots over the coffin outside the house. A crowd of onlookers applauded when the shots were fired.
