Sospeso un membro eletto del partito accusato di abuso sessuale

Il Sinn Fein ha confermato la sospensione di un suo membro eletto dopo che una presunta vittima ha denunciato al Sunday Tribune di aver subito abusi sessuali. Un’altra donna ha dichiarato di essere stata violentata all’età di 16 anni da un importante esponente dell’Irish Republican Army.
Un portavoce del Sinn Fein ha dichiarato che “Gerry Adams e il partito smentiscono assolutamente qualsiasi accusa di coprire casi di abuso”.
“La nostra posizione su questi temi è chiaro. Il benessere dei bambini è da sempre di primaria importanza. Le persone che dovrebbero indagare sulle accuse di abusi sono le autorità legali incaricato di questo compito – la Psni / Gardaí e i servizi sociali”.
“Se l’accusa di abusi sessuali è posta fatto nei confronti di un membro del Sinn Fein, il partito assicura che la questione verrà segnalata alle autorità competenti per legge. Il socio è sospeso dal partito, senza pregiudizi. Ciò è in contrasto con gli altri partiti politici che hanno permesso a propri iscritti nei cui confronti sono state mosse delle accuse, di rimanere politicamente attivi fino al completamento del processo giuridico”.
“Questa sospensione è stata attivata dopo il Psni ha avviato un’inchiesta in una denuncia di abuso storico”.
Gerry Adams è convinto che i suoi rivali politici stiano strumentalizzando le accuse per minare la sua figura.
Il Sinn Fein sospetta che le accuse sia fondate su mere insinuazioni e non sui fatti. “La decisione del Sunday Tribune di pubblicare una versione modificata della risposta di Gerry Adams del Sinn Fein ai quesiti posti dal Sunday Tribune è altrettanto eloquente. La questione è nelle mani dei nostri rappresentanti legali e verrà depositata una denunica dettagliata e formale alla Press Complaints Commission, “ha detto un portavoce.
“Non è compito del Sinn Fein a stabilire la colpevolezza o l’innocenza e attenderemo l’esito delle indagini di polizia”.

SF deny abuse cover-up claims (U TV)
Sinn Fein have vehemently denied any allegations of “cover up” of abuse.
The party confirmed a party member was suspended over allegations of abuse, after an alleged victim claimed in a Sunday newspaper she was abused as a child by someone who is now an elected representative.
Another woman alleged she was repeatedly raped at the age of 16 by a prominent IRA member.
“Gerry Adams and the party refute absolutely any allegation of covering up instances of abuse”, a Sinn Fein spokesperson told UTV.
“Our position on these matters is crystal clear. At all times the welfare of children is paramount. The people who should investigate allegations of abuse are the statutory authorities charged with this task – the PSNI/Gardaí and the Social Services.
“If an allegation of sexual abuse is made against a Sinn Fein member, the party ensures that the matter is reported to the relevant statutory authorities. The member is suspended from the party without prejudice. This is in contrast to other political parties which have allowed members against whom allegations are being made to remain politically active until the completion of the legal process.
“This suspension was activated after the PSNI commenced an investigation into an allegation of historic abuse.”
Last week, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams insisted he did not know his brother, Liam, who faces sex abuse charges, worked for his party in his west Belfast constituency. (Watch video>>)
Mr Adams said his political opponents were using the issue in an attempt to undermine him.
He said he also felt constrained from fully defending himself by a need to protect the privacy of family members and by a desire not to prejudice any future court proceedings against his brother.
Liam Adams faces charges he sexually abused his daughter Aine Tyrell in the 1970s and 80s.
The Sinn Fein President revealed in a UTV documentary he knew about the allegations since 1987.
Sinn Fein said the fresh allegations published in the Sunday Tribune were founded on innuendo and sensationalism and not facts.
“The Sunday Tribune’s decision to publish an edited version of Gerry Adams and Sinn Fein’s response to the questions put to us by the Sunday Tribune is equally telling. The matter is in the hands of our legal representatives and we will be lodging a detailed and formal complaint to the Press Complaints Commission,” a spokesman said.
“It is not the job of Sinn Fein to establish guilt or innocence and we will await the outcome of the police investigation.”
