Negli scorsi giorni la nostra famiglia ha avuto un incontro con il Segretario di Stato Shaun Woodward a Hillsborough.
“Siamo stati accompagnati dal nostro MP , Michelle Gildernew del Sinn Fein, dalla senatrice Mary White del Fianna Fail e da Paul O’Connor del Pat Finucane Centre.
Durante questo incontro il Segretario di Stato aveva informato la famiglia dell’ intenzione di rilasciare una dichiarazione,  che abbiamo capito che sia stata rilasciata questa mattina dal NIO.
Apprezziamo il fatto che Shaun Woodward abbia trovato il tempo di leggere la relazione sull’uccisione di Aidan dell’Historical Enquiries Team (HET) e di ascoltare la sua famiglia.
Noi crediamo che questo incontro sia stato molto importante  per la famiglia e  peril governo britannico.
E’ stato molto emozionante per tutti gli interessati e ha permesso agli anziani genitori di Aidan, John e Liz, di spiegare le molteplici molestie a cui Aidan era stato sottoposto fino alla sua morte e l’effetto devastante della sua perdita per la sua famiglia, gli amici e la comunità .
Abbiamo discusso delle circostanze della sparatoria e le conclusioni della relazione dell’HET.
Abbiamo spiegato al Segretario di Stato che la versione degli eventi offerti dalla esercito, che un proiettile è rimbalzato a terra e poi ha ucciso Aidan perché un soldato aveva le mani bagnate e mentre stava pulendo la pistola è partito il colpo accidentalmente, è la spiegazione ‘meno plausibile’ in accordo con la relazione dell’Historical Enquiries Team.
Aidan è stato ferito a morte da un proiettile rimbalzato.
Per quanto riguarda il motivo per cui un proiettile avrebbe colpito a terra meno di due metri dietro a Aidan e a 283,4 metri di distanza, secondo quanto contenuto nella relazione dell’HET, è chiaro che ‘le possibilità di non essere stato mirato o la casualità sono circostanze talmente remote da poter essere praticamente ignorate’ .
Visti i risultati della relazione HET riteniamo molto significativo e positivo che il ministro della Difesa abbia co-firmato la presente pubblica dichiarazione insieme al Segretario di Stato dell’Irlanda del Nord.
Per anni abbiamo lottato per la verità e l’ammissione.
La relazione redatta dall’HET, a nostro avviso, rappresenta la più vicina verità a quello che avvenne quel giorno. L’incontro con Shaun Woodward è il riconoscimento a livello ufficiale che mancava.
Il nostro unico rammarico, in questa fase, è che Elish non fosse con noi la scorsa settimana. Ha condotto la fiaccola per suo fratello, Aidan, per molti anni e il suo spirito è ancora con noi.

Family welcome statement on death (BBC News Northern Ireland)
The family of Aidan McAnespie shot dead at an Army checkpoint in 1988 have welcomed a statement from the goverment expressing its regret at the killing.
In recent days our family held a meeting with Secretary of State Shaun Woodward MP at Hillsborough.
We were accompanied at the meeting by our MP, Michelle Gildernew of Sinn Fein, Fianna Fail Senator Mary White and Paul O’Connor of the Pat Finucane Centre.
During this meeting the secretary of state told the family that he intended to issue a statement which we understand the NIO has released this morning.
We appreciate the fact that Shaun Woodward took the time to read the HET report into Aidan’s killing and to listen to his family.
We believe that this meeting was very important for both the family and the British Government.
It was very emotional for all concerned and allowed Aidan’s elderly parents, John and Liz, to explain the extensive harassment that Aidan had been subjected to in the lead-up to his death and the devastating effect of his loss on his family, friends and community.
The circumstances of the shooting and the findings of the HET report were discussed.
We explained to the secretary of state that the version of events offered by the Army, that a bullet ricocheted off the ground and then killed Aidan because a soldier had wet hands and was cleaning a gun which accidentally discharged was the ‘least likely’ explanation according to the HET report.
Aidan was fatally wounded by a ricochet bullet.
In respect of why a bullet should strike the ground less that two metres behind Aidan at 283.4 metres range the HET report is clear that ‘the chances of it being un-aimed or random seem so remote in the circumstances that they can be virtually disregarded’.
Given the findings of the HET report we find it highly significant and positive that the Minister of Defence has co-signed this public statement along with the Northern Ireland secretary.
For years we have fought for truth and acknowledgement.
The HET report, in our view, represents the closest that we as a family have got to the truth of what occurred that day. The meeting with Shaun Woodward is the acknowledgement at official level that was missing.
Our only regret at this stage is that Elish was not with us last week. She carried the torch for her brother, Aidan, for many years and her spirit is still with us.
