Il Segretario di Stato si scusa pubblicamente dopo che l’HET ha rivalutato i risultati dell’inchiesta iniziale della RUC

Majella O’Hare fu uccisa nell’agosto del 1976 nei pressi della sua casa a Whitecross (South Armagh). Ad essere inizialmente accusato dell’omicidio era stato il soldato Michael Williams, che era riuscito a scagionarsi testimoniando che a sparare fu un membro dell’IRA nascosto tra i cespugli.
L’Historical Enquiries Team ha però appoggiato i risultati dell’inchiesta iniziale della Royal Ulster Constabulary, che raccomandava di procuratori che ad essere accusato di omicidio doveva essere il soldato Williams.
Nella lettera di scuse consegnata oggi e scritta a nome dell’esercito e del governo, il Segretario di Stato Liam Fox, ha detto di essere rimasto “sconvolto e rattristato nel leggere questo resoconto molto completo su quanto è successo”.
“Le azioni del soldato hanno provocato la perdita di una vita giovane e innocente, causando dolore e angoscia a coloro che hanno conosciuto e amato della Majella, a nome dell’Esercito e del Governo, sono profondamente dispiaciuto che questo tragico incidente sia successo”.
Il commento a caldo di Maria, madre di Majella, è stato: “E ‘stato qualcosa alla fine di tutti questi anni, ma niente la riporterà”.
“Oggi mi sento solo e triste”.
Michael, il fratello di Majella, ha comunque sottolineato che, nonostante le scuse, l’angoscia della famiglia continua.
“La chiusura non avviene mai in un caso come questo. Se perdi un figlio, la chiusura è un termine che non va mai realmente a buon fine. Dobbiamo solo avere la forza, forse, di andare avanti,” ha detto.

Mother’s emotion at army apology (UTV)
The elderly mother of a 12-year-old girl, who was killed by a soldier in south Armagh almost 35 years ago, has been handed a letter of apology from Defence Secretary Liam Fox.
Majella O’Hare was walking to confession near her home in Whitecross when she was shot twice in the back in August 1976.
Private Michael Williams – who was acquitted of manslaughter – claimed he was firing at an IRA man hiding in the bushes.
But an investigation carried out by the HET last year found there was no gunman.
The HET report supports the findings of the original RUC investigation, which recommended to Prosecutors that Private Williams be charged with manslaughter.
In the letter of apology written on behalf of the Army and the Government, Mr Fox says he was “shocked and saddened to read this very full account of what happened”.
“The soldier’s actions resulted in the loss of a young and innocent life, causing sorrow and anguish for those who knew and loved Majella, On behalf of the Army and of the Government, I am profoundly sorry that this tragic incident should have happened”.
The letter was handed to the O’Hare family on Monday.
Majella’s mother, Mary, who is 88, told UTV: “It was something at the end of all these years but nothing brings her back.”
“I feel lonely today and sad.”
Majella’s brother, Michael, said that, despite the apology, the family’s heartache continues.
“Closure never happens in a case like this. If you lose a child, closure is a term that never really comes to fruition. We just get the strength, maybe, to carry on,” he said.
This is the second time the Government issues an official apology for a killing involving the Army during the Troubles.
Last year, Prime Minister David Cameron apologised for the killing of 13 civilians on Bloody Sunday following the publication of the Saville report.
Majella was the youngest of five children.
