BREXIT. IN CENTINAIA IN PROTESTA CONTRO IL ‘PERICOLO’ DI UN CONFINE TRA NORD E SUD

I manifestanti confermano l’impegno nel contrastare l’istituzione di un confine fisico tra il Nord e il Sud dell’isola

Centinaia di persone hanno preso parte a numerose manifestazioni di massa sul confine irlandese in opposizione alla Brexit. La proteste hanno avuto luogo si sono tenute sabato 30 marzo (il giorno dopo la teorica uscita del Regno Unito dalla UE che avrebbe dovuto avvenire il 29 marzo) in una serie di punti di attraversamento nelle contee di Tyrone, Louth, Donegal, Fermanagh, Cavan e Monaghan.

I manifestanti sono scesi in strada brandendo bandiere dell’Unione Europea e stringendo tra le mani cartelli che dicevano: “Nessun confine, nessuna barriera. Rispetta il voto di rimanere’.

Il leader dello Sinn Fein, Mary Lou McDonald, è stata affiancata dal vicepresidente di partito Michelle O’Neill e dal MLA Conor Murphy.
La McDonald ha dichiarato: “Ci troviamo in una circostanza molto pericolosa in cui siamo sempre più vicini alla possibilità reale di una rottura e di una Brexit nel caos”.
“A questo punto le persone dovrebbero capire quanto sarebbe grave per tutti noi. La realtà è che la Brexit, in qualsiasi forma, è un disastro per l’isola d’Irlanda.”

Declan Fearon, portavoce del Border Communities Against Brexit, ha dichiarato: “Non permetteremo allo zoccolo duro dei Tories e ERG (European Research Group) e soprattutto al DUP, di distruggere questa comunità e riportarci ai giorni in cui questa era una landa economica”.
“A Carrickcarnon c’erano circa un migliaio di manifestanti, a Derry ce n’erano cinque o seicento e ce n’erano due o trecento negli altri luoghi”.
“La gente è arrabbiata per la Brexit. Sono arrabbiati perché non vengono considerati e sono frustrati dalle sciocchezze che hanno fatto questa settimana a Westminster”.
“Supportiamo il backstop e il withdrawal agreement e vogliamo vederlo attuato”.
“Pensiamo che sia importante fare queste proteste per dare voce alla gente nella comunità”.
“È positivo che il governo irlandese, Westminster e Bruxelles vedano le persone che vivono nelle comunità di confine piuttosto preoccupate per il nostro futuro.

Aine Quinn, studentessa che vive lungo il confine, concorda sul fatto che la Brexit porterebbe il caos economico nell’area.
Ha detto: “Ieri doveva essere il giorno della Brexit e oggi non siamo più in grado di capire cosa significhi rispetto a tre anni fa”.
“Quello che sappiamo è che non ci sono risultati positivi per noi. Il governo britannico ha cercato di respingere noi come una piccola questione tra le altre grandi questioni”.
“Il problema principale per me e la mia comunità è la libera circolazione delle persone, che si tratti di lavorare, studiare o commerciare”.
