IRA charge man bailed by sheriff (MotherwellTIMES)

An alleged IRA sympathiser from Newarthill appeared in court this week after being charged under anti-terrorism laws.

John Murphy was accused of wearing clothes and a badge which ‘aroused reasonable suspicion’ that he was a member or supporter of a banned organisation.

Murphy (38), of Yett Road, was arrested in Newarthill on Friday in what police called ‘an intelligence-led, pre-planned operation’.

He appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday when he pleaded not guilty to an offence under section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

The charge refers to clothing including a beret, gloves, jacket and an ‘Easter Lily’ badge with the words ‘Our Fallen Comrades’ which Murphy is said to have worn while marching with a band in Viewpark on February 22 this year.

Trial was set for June and Sheriff Vincent Smith granted bail, with the special condition that Murphy does not take part in any public march while he is awaiting trial.
