Dissident attack on Lisnaskea police station condemned (NewsLetter)

Dissident republicans are believed to have been behind a gun attack on Lisnaskea PSNI station last night.

DUP MLA Arlene Foster said the base had been targeted with automatic gunfire.

Condemning those responsible, Mrs Foster said the shooting was the work of cowards.

“They are people who have nothing to offer society,” she said.

“At at time when everyone practically in our community is focused on Christmas being a time of peace and goodwill, they were trying to perpetrate evil and maim anyone possible.

“I am glad that no one we are aware of has been injured, and I know those who are behind this incident are not representative of the people in Co Fermanagh.”

Tom Elliott also said he was thankful there were no reports of injuries.

The Ulster Unionist MLA called the shooting a “ruthless act of terrorism” and said: “Once again republican terrorists have shown that they have nothing to offer the people of Northern Ireland, but pain and suffering. They are driven by warped ideology and bloodlust.”

His party colleague Ross Hussey MLA added: “When most families are coming together to celebrate Christmas, these terrorists’ actions have once again shown the hollowness of their cause.”

Last night there was no confirmation of the attack from the PSNI.

However, the Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, posted a message on Twitter saying: “Officers escape death when dissident republicans attack Lisnaskea station with gunfire. Cowardly and futile. Terrorism will never prevail.”
