GIRO D’ITALIA 2014, I REPUBBLICANI CHIEDONO IL PASSAGGIO A WEST BELFAST

Reroute Giro D’Italia cycle race to include west Belfast, urges MP (Belfast Telegraph)

Not a wheel has turned, but already there have been local winners and losers ahead of next year’s Giro D’Italia cycle race.

After it emerged that the Falls Road was not included in the Belfast stage of the famous road race, nationalists called for it to be rerouted.

The 2014 Giro will begin on May 9 with a 22km team time trial starting at Titanic Belfast, taking in the Newtownards Road, Stormont, Queen’s Bridge, the Ormeau Road and Stranmillis before ending in Belfast city centre.

West Belfast Sinn Fein MP Paul Maskey said he was disappointed: “We will campaign to ensure this race comes to this part of the city.”

Upper Falls SDLP councillor Tim Attwood said he would also raise it with Belfast City Council.
