LA ‘NEW’ IRA RIVENDICA L’OMICIDIO BLACK
New IRA group admit M1 murder (UTV)
A republican paramilitary group calling itself the IRA has admitted responsibility for the murder of prison officer David Black.
In a statement to the Irish News newspaper, the group says the killing was in direct response to conditions within Maghaberry Prison.
There has been a long running republican protest at the jail in relation to strip searching and the treatment of dissident prisoners.
The 52-year-old father of two was shot by gunmen on the M1 near Lurgan, Co Armagh on Thursday 1 November as he drove to work.
Mr Black, who was from Cookstown, was laid to rest last Tuesday. During his service, mourners heard that he was “a man committed to peace.”
In July, it emerged that some of the main dissident republican terrorist factions in Northern Ireland were uniting to form a new version of the IRA.
Statement
“On Thursday, 1st of November, 2012, an active service unit of the IRA executed prison guard David Black.
“While the IRA never takes this type of action lightly, the IRA has a responsibility to protect and defend republican POWs.
“This action was in direct response to the torture and degradation of POWs held in Maghaberry.
“Rather than showing the leadership necessary to resolve the protest in Maghaberry they continue to play politics with the lives of republican POWs and indeed their own guards and PCOs.
“Similarly, the charade of hypocritical condemnation from the local political classes does nothing to resolve the issues created by their inactions.”
