Sinn Fein slams ‘bigots’ who paint-bombed hall (Belfast Telegraph)
Sinn Fein has condemned those responsible for paint-bombing the headquarters of the Apprentice Boys of Derry as sectarian bigots.
Police were called to the Magazine Street building on Monday night after receiving reports of criminal damage.
Three bottles filled with paint had been thrown, causing minor damage to the outside wall of the listed building.
Councillor Mickey Cooper said the attack on the Memorial Hall was unacceptable.
“Those who carried it out are no different to those who carry out attacks on GAA halls, churches and other cultural and community facilities,” he said. “They do not reflect the views of the community in the Bogside or the wider area.”
He said they were “motivated solely by sectarian bigotry”.
Derry City Council workers cleaned up the damage early yesterday morning.
Apprentice Boys general secretary Billy Moore said he hoped those responsible will be apprehended swiftly.
He said: “It is sad in this time, when we have got Clipper boats here in the town and all sorts of goodwill and all sorts of events to look forward to, that there are still individuals prepared to throw paint bombs in our city.
He said the hall was one of the most attacked in Northern Ireland, although the frequency of incidents have decreased in recent years.
