Arson attack on PUP ‘meant to kill’ (UTV)
A Progressive Unionist Party spokesman has told UTV that he believes those behind an arson attack on his Antrim home intended to kill.
A car, believed to have been stolen, was set alight outside the property in the Dunsilly Terrace area shortly before 1am on Monday.
“I was informed by the Fire Service that there was a gas cylinder in it – if it had exploded, there could have been fatalities,” Ken Wilkinson said.
“It was attempted murder, nothing more and nothing less.”

Another car which had been sitting outside his home was also burnt out in the attack and damage was caused to the front of the property.
“We saw these tremendous flames going up some 20ft in the air,” Mr Wilkinson added.
The PUP spokesman further told UTV he believed he was being made a target because of his stance against criminal elements in his home town – but insisted he would not be deterred.
“I will continue to speak out against these people and against these activities,” Mr Wilkinson said.
Chairman of the Policing Board, Brian Rea, condemned those responsible.
“It is truly fortunate that no one was injured in this terrifying attack,” he said.
“As a member of the Independent Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Mr Wilkinson is working to make the community safer.
“Whoever was responsible for this attack intended to cause serious harm and anyone with information must pass it to the police or contact Crimestoppers.”
Alliance Party leader and South Antrim MLA David Ford also condemned the attack.
“Somebody could have been easily killed or seriously injured in this attack. The people responsible have no regard for the lives of others,” he said.
“I would like to pass on my support to Ken following this attack. Nobody deserves to be targeted like this.”
Detectives in Newtownabbey are investigating the blaze and a car has been seized for further examination.
