Six men have been arrested after the 32 County Sovereignty Movement‘s annual Easter Monday commemoration in Creggan Cemetery this afternoon.
The six were arrested after the event and taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite for questioning.
Several hundred dissident republicans supporters gathered at the cemetery this afternoon for the annual event at which wreaths were laid. A masked man addressed the crowd reading out a statement which outlined the Real IRA’s vow to continue a campaign of violence against police and army in the north.
He said he was speaking on behalf of Óglaigh na hÉireann and said the organisation would continue to attack “Crown forces” and “British interests and infrastructure”.
A police spokesman said: “In relation to the event in Creggan Cemetery today police took the decision to run a low key operational response to the event. Any alleged breaches of law reported or coming to the attention of police will be rigoursly and thoroughly investigated. The PSNI work to ensure that all their actions are appropriate, proportionate and lawful. Our priorities are to protect the public, uphold the human rights of all, preserve public order and gather evidence.”
