‘No paramilitary link’ in Belfast riots (UTV)
Police say there was no paramilitary involvement in Friday night’s rioting in east Belfast, during which six officers were injured and seven people were arrested.
The trouble flared when crowds gathered in Albertbridge Road and Castlereagh Street, after the annual Battle of the Somme Orange Order parade.
But police say it was “spontaneous disorder” and not orchestrated by paramilitary organisations.
“From what we can see there was no paramilitary involvement in what happened last night,” PSNI Chief Inspector Mark McEwan told UTV.
“The violence was spontaneous, it was by a number of people within the Castlereagh Street area attacking police, sparked off by crowds gathering on both sides.”
Six officers sustained injuries as they came under attack with bricks, pieces of masonry and steel bars. Vehicles were mounted and attempts were made to destroy cameras.
A number of baton rounds were fired and water cannons used to restore calm at around 4am on Saturday. A total of seven arrests were made for disorderly behaviour.
Mr McEwan continued: “There were six officers injured last night. None were hospitalised, however the injuries were caused by members of the crowd throwing large pieces of masonry at the so significant injuries and a lot of damage to vehicles.”
The events followed a ‘mini Twelfth’ parade on Friday, which took place amid a heavy police presence as the bands made their way past the flashpoint area on the lower Newtownards Road.
It is believed one assault lead to the escalation of the trouble, but that it was not orchestrated. Police became the targets as they worked to keep crowds apart.
The disorder was not as bad as that seen in the area last month, when shots were fired and petrol bombs thrown at police as hundreds took to the streets.
The UVF were blamed for orchestrating that bout of violence, during which a press photographer was amongst those shot.
Police say they are working with the community to try to restore order.
