Derry murder victim named (UTV)
A murder investigation is underway after Londonderry man Paddy Harkin was found dead, following a suspected assault.
The victim’s body was found in a house at Bayview Terrace – just yards from Strand Road PSNI station – during the early hours of Sunday morning.
A second man was found with serious injuries and remains in a critical condition in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital.
One man has been arrested.
The victim was identified in a statement issued by the family through Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Martina Anderson.
“The family of Paddy Harkin has requested that the media respect their privacy and stay away from the family home,” she said.
“Once the circumstances surrounding Paddy’s tragic death become clear, the family may wish to make a public statement. Until that time, I would respectfully ask that the media respect their request for privacy.”
SDLP Assembly member Pat Ramsay told UTV people in the city had been shocked by what happened.
“This is an awful tragedy that the people in this city are trying to come to terms with,” he said. “I do understand the second person is very unwell at this time and our prayers are with him that he can make a full recovery.”
Local priest Father Michael Canny added: “Our initial reaction has to be that there’s family at this time coming to terms with the reality of the situation, and our thoughts and our prayers must be very much with them.”
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, who knew the victim, also paid tribute to him and said the family were in his prayers.
“I know Paddy and I must say he was a very inoffensive man and I was shocked and saddened this morning when I was told of his tragic death,” he said.
“While I understand that there is a person in custody in connection with the murder and assault, I nonetheless would encourage anyone with any information about this incident to come forward.”
