New Parades Commission appointed (UTV)
A former senior Orangeman – who had a dispute with the leadership of the Orange Order – has been appointed to the Parades Commission, the Northern Ireland Office has confirmed.
The Reverend Brian Kennaway will take up his post along with Douglas Bain, Delia Close, Dr Catriona King, Frances Nolan and Robin Percival
Secretary of State Owen Paterson has also announced that Peter Osborne will be the chairman of the organisation.
All of those appointed will take up their posts on 1 January.
In a statement, Mr Paterson said: “I am sure these new Commissioners will continue to work with local communities to ensure we do not see a repeat of the violence which occurred at a small number of parades during the summer past.”
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has called on the new commission not to repeat “the mistakes” of the previous commission.
“The last Commission made a number of very bad decisions which added significantly to the tension around the marching season”, he said.
“The new Commission needs to ensure that it does not repeat these mistakes.
“It also needs to agree a long term strategic resolution to dealing with the few remaining contentious parades,” he added.
Mr Adams was speaking before a meeting with a loyalist parades group in a bid to resolve issues surrounding a contentious Twelfth of July march through Ardoyne.
Talks with members of the North and West Belfast Parades and Cultural Forum were prompted after three days of rioting at the north Belfast flashpoint.
The Parades Commission is to stay in place for another year, after legislation to replace the body was put on hold.
The DUP has blamed the UUP for the re-appointment of the disputed body.
“Whilst the DUP was working to find a way forward, the UUP was found trying to score cheap headlines”, said DUP Upper Bann MLA Stephen Moutray.
“Responsible political leadership means doing more than cynical point-scoring: something the UUP has clearly yet to learn. They fought to keep the Parades Commission and the appointment of another Parades Commission is the fruit of their campaign,” Mr Moutray added.
UUP leader Tom Elliott said: “Stephen Moutray flatters us by suggesting we have caused the draft parades Bill to indefinitely stall. He knows as well as anybody else that this was a deeply flawed document which was resoundly rejected by a cross section of our society, from the Human Rights Commission to vintage car organisations.”
