La richiesta di un’inchiesta internazionale indipendente sull’omicidio dell’avvocato di Belfast Pat Finucane,  è stato rinnovata, dopo che WikiLeaks ha rilasciato documenti che accusa l’MI5 di essere in possesso di documenti segreti sull’omicidio

Pat Finucane fu ucciso da una banda dell’UFF di fronte alla moglie e ai figli, nella sua casa di North Belfast nel 1989. Fu colpito 14 volte, in quel che resta uno degli omicidi più controversi dei Troubles.
La sua famiglia pretendo un’inchiesta indipendente sullo stile di quella sulla Bloody Sunday, in merito alle accuse di collusione tra i killers lealisti e le forze di sicurezza.
Secondo i cablogrammi statunitensi trapelati, pubblicati dal quotidiano The Guardian, l’ex primo ministro irlandese Bertie Ahern disse ai diplomatici americani che “tutti sanno che il Regno Unito è stato coinvolto” nell’omicidio.
Un portavoce della famiglia Finucane ha dichiarato a UTV: “La famiglia sta ancora valutando il rapporto del quotidiano e vogliono prendere visione di qualsiasi altro materiale originale e compiere sforzi alla ricerca di altre rivelazioni.”
Chiedendo che vengano svelate completamente tutte le informazioni circa l’uccisione di Pat Finucane, Margaret Ritchie, leader SDLP, ha dichiarato: “Questo riconoscimento che l’MI5 abbia i file sul caso solleva una serie di importanti questioni in primo luogo, il fatto stesso che li abbia sul caso Finucane pone la domanda. Perché loro li hanno e che cos’hanno?”.
“E in secondo luogo ci sono altre domande da porre, perché l’MI5 è in possesso di informazioni di intelligence che la PSNI forse non ha?”
La signora Ritchie ha aggiunto: “Lo SDLP rimarrà sempre vigile su eventuali divulgazione parziale o tentativi di sopprimere informazioni o di insabbiarle  prima della pubblicazione, in quanto questa è una possibilità concreta ai sensi della legislazione vigente.”
“La priorità dello SDLP ottenere la verità e la giustizia che la famiglia Finucane cerca e merita. L’unico modo per raggiungere questo obiettivo è per una pubblicazione completa di tutte le informazioni rilevanti sul caso.
“Una inchiesta censurata non sarà accettata”.
L’apparente offerta dell’MI5, a consegnare documenti segreti nell’ambito di qualsiasi inchiesta pubblica, è arrivata dopo un incontro tra l’inviato americano in Irlanda Mitchell Reiss e l’allora capo dell’MI5 Eliza Manningham Buller.
Ha riferito, a detta del Sig. Reiss, che lei sarebbe disposta a cedere i files dell’MI5 sul caso in qualsiasi inchiesta pubblica, ma procedendo ai sensi della nuova normativa introdotta nel 2005.
Parte di tale normativa permette la censura di materiali sensibili in qualsiasi relazione finale pubblicata nell’inchiesta.
Gerry Kelly, membro dell’Assembly dello Sinn Féin per la circoscrizione di North Belfast, ha detto che le rivelazioni hanno dato ulteriore peso alla campagna della famiglia per ottenere un’indagine completa.
“Lo Stato britannico ha mai riconosciuto fino ad oggi, di essere in possesso di files e informazioni sull’omicidio di Pat Finucane. Essi si sono invece nascosti dietro ad una lunga campagna di occultamento e di copertura,” ha detto.
“Le rivelazioni secondo cui l’MI5 sia in possesso di files direttamente connessi alla morte di Pat Finucane e che l’Inquiries Act 2005 è stata avviata dietro loro insistenza, per evitare che la verità venga rivelata, aggiunge maggior peso alla richiesta della famiglia di un’indagine internazionale completa e indipendente sull’omicidio.
“Questo è ciò che il governo britannico ha deciso ed è quello che il governo britannico deve consegnare”.
Owen Patterson, segretario di Stato si pronuncerà all’inizio del prossimo anno, sull’eventuale accoglimento della richiesta e, in caso affermativo, in quali termini.

Finucane inquiry calls after WikiLeaks claims (UTV)
Calls for an independent international inquiry into the murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane have been renewed, after WikiLeaks released documents claiming MI5 offered to hand over secret files on the killing.
Mr Finucane was gunned down by a UFF gang in front of his wife at children, in his north Belfast home in 1989. He was shot 14 times, in what remains one of the most controversial murders of the Troubles.
His family wants a Bloody Sunday style independent inquiry into allegations of collusion between the loyalist killers and security forces.
According to the US leaked cables, published by the Guardian newspaper, former Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern told American diplomats that “everyone knows the UK was involved” in the murder.
A spokesperson for the Finucane family told UTV: “The family is still considering the newspaper report and want to see any other original material and make efforts to see if there are any other revelations.”
Calling for full disclosure of all information about Mr Finucane’s killing, SDLP leader Margaret Ritchie said: “This acknowledgement that MI5 have files on the case raises a number of important issues. Firstly, the very fact they have files on the Finucane case begs the question why do they have them and what is in them?
“And secondly there are further questions to be asked why MI5 are in possession of intelligence that perhaps the PSNI are not.”
Ms Ritchie added: “The SDLP will always remain vigilant about any partial disclosure or attempts to suppress information or clean files prior to publication, as this is a distinct possibility under current legislation.
“The SDLP’s priority is for the Finucane family to get the truth and justice they seek and deserve. The only way to achieve this is for full disclosure of any relevant information to the case.
“A censored inquiry will not be accepted.”
The apparent offer by MI5, to hand over secret files to any public inquiry, came after a meeting between US envoy to Ireland Mitchell Reiss and the then head of MI5 Eliza Manningham Buller.
She reportedly told Mr Reiss she would be willing to hand over MI5’s case files to any public inquiry, but she wanted it to proceed under the terms of new legislation introduced in 2005.
Part of that legislation allows for sensitive materials to be withheld from any final report published by the inquiry.
Sinn Féin MLA for North Belfast Gerry Kelly said that reports gave further weight to the family’s campaign for a full inquiry.
“The British State has to date never acknowledged holding files and information into the murder of Pat Finucane. Instead they have hidden behind a long standing campaign of concealment and cover-up,” he said.
“The revelations that MI5 are holding files directly related to the murder of Pat Finucane and that the Inquiries Act 2005 was initiated at their insistence, to prevent the truth from being revealed, adds significant further weight to the family demand for a fully independent international inquiry into the murder.
“That is what the British government agreed and that is what the British government must deliver.”
Secretary of State Owen Paterson will announce early next year if an inquiry is to be held and, if so, under what terms.
