DERRY.

Derry girl, 17, has gun held to head (U TV)
A 17-year-old girl has had a gun held to her head in her Londonderry home before masked men opened fire on her family’s car.
The teenager and two other children who were alone in the semi-detached bungalow in the Cornshell Fields estate at the time – an 18-month old girl and a boy aged 12 – escaped injury.
The shooting happened after the girl answered the door to two gunmen at about 10.40pm on Tuesday night, who demanded to know where her father was.
They asked for him by name and, after being told he was not at home, they fired a number of shotgun blasts outside the property.
The driver-side window of the family’s Renault Clio and the windscreen of a large horse trailer were shattered before the men made their escape.
Investigating police have removed a number of items, including shotgun cartridges, for further examination.
It is not known who carried out the attack, but political condemnation has been strong.
“This family this morning is traumatised and they’re asking questions but unfortunately no one’s coming forward, first of all to say it was them or to offer a rationale for this attack – because there is no rationale,” said Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney.
His party colleague, councillor for the greater Shantallow area Tony Hassan, said: “It’s very worrying that this is the third incident in the city in recent weeks during which shots have been fired.”
He added: “As an elected representative for the area, I would like to make it clear to those responsible for Tuesday night’s shooting that the local community in Cornshell Fields do not want these actions taking place on their streets and those behind them need to stop.”
Blaming dissidents for the shooting, SDLP MLA Mary Bradley said those responsible were copying the Provisional IRA and were “bound to repeat their failures”.
She added: “Those living in Shantallow, at large, reject paramilitary violence and want to see lawful and positive civic policing in our community.
“People in this neighbourhood deserve to live in peace. It’s about time these dissidents caught themselves on and stopped evoking terror in this area.”
The family at the centre of the attack in the north Derry estate is understood to be staying with friends.
Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
