Una squadra di guardie carcerarie pone fine alla protesta iniziata il 4 aprile da 28 prigionieri repubblicani barricatisi nella mensa della Roe House di Maghaberry

“Il Prison Service è lieta di annunciare che l’incidente in Maghaberry prigione è stato risolto”, ha detto un portavoce del Northern Ireland Prison Service.
Si è conclusa così la protesta avviata da 28 prigionieri repubblicani dopo che il 4 aprile avevano deciso di barricarsi nella mensa della Roe House di Maghaberry al termine della Santa Messa della Domenica di Pasqua. I detenuti volevano in questo modo testimoniare contro le preoccupanti e inique condizioni dei prigionieri all’interno del carcere e richiedere il ripristino dello status di prigioniero politico.
Un oggetto sospetto era stato gettato nei corridoi, ma è stato confermato dagli artificieri che non si è trattava di un dispositivo di pericolosità vitale.
La decisione di porre fine alla protesta dopo 2 gg di asseragliamento è stata presa dal direttore del NIPS Robin Masefield.
“La fine della vicenda è stato osservato dai membri dell’Independent Monitoring Board.
“Non ci sono stati feriti nè tra il personale o nè tra i prigionieri”.

Prison staff end inmates’ protest (Irish Times)
Prison officers at Northern Ireland’s top security jail last night forcibly removed a group of republican inmates who barricaded themselves into a dining hall.
No one was injured in the hour long operation to end the two-day protest by 28 prisoners at Maghaberry Prison in Co Antrim.
The inmates blocked the doors of the room yesterday morning on the day the 1916 Easter Rising is commemorated. A suspicious object was thrown out into the corridor at the outset of the incident, but bomb disposal officers later declared that it was not a viable explosive device.
The prisoners, who had been attending a Mass in the hall inside the republican Roe House accommodation block, remained there last night as supporters called for them to be granted political status.
The decision to end the demonstration was taken by Northern Ireland Prison Service director Robin Masefield. “The Prison Service is pleased to announce that the incident in Maghaberry Prison has been resolved,” said a NIPS spokesman.
“The ending of the incident was observed by members of the Independent Monitoring Board. “There were no injuries to staff or any prisoners.”
The protest came as dissident republicans continue to launch attacks throughout Northern Ireland.
On Saturday, a car bomb was abandoned outside Crossmaglen police station in Co Armagh. The vehicle, which was packed with containers of flammable liquid, failed to detonate.
