Angry scenes at Derry DPP meeting (U TV)
Up to 50 dissident Republican protestors forced their way into a public meeting of the District Policing Partnership in Derry on Wednesday morning.
The protestors had been denied access to the meeting which was held in the city’s Da Vinci’s Hotel, as the room was already filled.
But after reading a statement voicing their frustrations, the protestors decided to force their way in.
Minor scuffles broke out between the group, police and hotel staff as the protestors forced open a door, disrupting the meeting.
Once in, protestors chanted slogans and blew whistles, keeping up a barrage of noise in an attempt to have the meeting abandoned.
However, the meeting had begun early and the agenda was concluded shortly after the protestors broke in.
The Chair of the DPP, Sinn Fein Councillor Elisha McLaughlin, told UTV the protestors will not prevent future public meetings from taking place
“These people are allowed to protest in a peaceful manner but it seems as if they are not capable of doing so. I believe that the next DPP meeting will have the same volume of community representatives and constituents of this area and then these people will know that the people of this area want and need these meetings.”
In July a similar DPP meeting was called off in the city when hard-liners stormed a hall shouting republican slogans, letting off stink bombs and sounding horns.
Last month, the start of a Limavady DPP meeting in Dungiven had to be delayed after another dissident protest.
On Wednesday, the protestors dispersed once the meeting ended and no arrests were made.
