Declan Duffy è stato arrestato questa mattina sulla base dell’European Arrest Warrant, in relazione all’assassinio di Michael Newman a Derbyshire (Inghilterra) nel 1992.
L’High Court di Dublino ha deciso che sarà detenuto in custodia fino al 27 maggio. Il giudice ha aggiunto che dovrebbe essere presentata la richiesta di libertà su cauzione.
Duffy, che è originario della contea di Armagh, Irlanda del Nord è il secondo uomo ad essere arrestato nel corso di questa settimana in connessione all’omicidio di cui l’INLA (Irish National Liberation Army) rivendicò la responsabilità.
Le autorità britanniche stanno chiedendo l’ estradizione di Anthony Patrick Gorman, 39 anni,  arrestato martedi scorso  in una fabbrica a Shercock, nella contea di Cavan.
Nel 2004, anche Joseph Magee fu condannato ad una pena di 25 anni per l’omicidio Newman dalla Nottingham Crown Court, ma venne successivamente rilasciato sulla base di quanto sancito dal Good Friday Agreement.

A man wanted in connection with the murder of a British army recruitment officer was remanded in custody by the High Court in Dublin on Thursday.
Declan Duffy, 36, of Hanover Street Dublin 8, was arrested on Thursday under a European Arrest Warrant.
Mr Duffy, faces charges in the UK over the murder of Michael Newman in Derby city centre in England in 1992.
He was remanded in custody until May 27. The court was told that a bail application would be made.
Mr Duffy, who is originally from County Armagh, Northern Ireland is the second man to be arrested over the murder this week.
Michael Newman was shot and killed as he walked to his car in the city centre in April 1992.
The Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) later claimed responsibility for the killing.
British authorities are seeking the extradition of Anthony Patrick Gorman, 39, who was arrested at a factory in Shercock, County Cavan on Tuesday.
In 2004, another man – Joseph Magee – was sentenced to 25 years at Nottingham Crown Court for Sgt Newman’s murder, but was later released under the terms of the Good Friday agreement.
