The Five Demands

Propongo la traduzione di una lettera di una ‘madre orgogliosa’ della scelta scelta di suo figlio, pubblicata dal Belfast Telegraph.

Scrivo per concondare con il Chief Constable che i dissidenti non hanno ucciso il desiderio dei giovani di impegnasi a servire il PSNI.
In ogni fase dell’istruzione di mio figlio, GCSE, A-level, laurea, lo abbiamo dissuaso, un cattolico, ad unirsi alle forze di polizia. Noi, i suoi genitori, abbiamo vissuto i Troubles e sappiamo che il prezzo che le famiglie dei poliziotti hanno dovuto pagare.
Dopo aver raggiunto la laurea ed aver ottenuto un buon posto di lavoro,  ha ancora voluto unirsi alle forze di polizia.
Il 5 marzo abbiamo sostenuto la sua decisione. Ha fatto domanda, insieme ad altri 8500, di aderire al PSNI. Il 7 marzo (il 9 marzo in realtà, ndr) è stato il giorno dell’orribile assassinio di Stephen Carroll  e di una chiamata da parte di sua madre, per chiedergli di ripensarci.
La sua risposta è stata “assolutamente no, questo mi ha reso ancor più determinato nel volermi unire alla polizia”.
E ha ragione. Speriamo che gli altri 8500 aspiranti sentano lo stesso.
Se avrà la fortuna di essere uno dei 440 candidati ad ottenere il posto, così sia, ma se non lo sarà, so che inoltrerà una nuova richiesta. Siamo fiduciosi, che quando tutti i nuovi giovani motivati aderiranno al PSNI avremo una forza di polizia per il 21 ° secolo e il veleno dei dissidenti potrà essere messo a tacere. Potremo quindi andare avanti con la società civile che tutti meritiamo.

Young people defy dissidents (Belfast Telegraph)
I write to agree with the Chief Constable that the dissidents have not killed off the desire of committed young people to serve in the PSNI.
At each stage of my son’s education, GCSE, A-levels, degree, we have dissuaded him, a Catholic, from joining the police. We, his parents, have lived through the Troubles and we know the price that police families have had to pay.
Having achieved an excellent degree and been recruited to a good graduate post he still wanted to join the police and on
March 5 we supported his decision. He put in his application, along with 8,500 others, to join the PSNI. March 7 brought the horrific murder of PC Carroll and a call from his mother to ask him to reconsider.
His response was “absolutely not, this has made me even more determined to join the police”.
And he is right. Hopefully, the other 8,500 applicants feel the same.
If he is lucky enough to be one of the 440 successfully applicants, so be it, but if not I know he will apply again. Hopefully, when all of the newly motivated young people join the PSNI we will have a police force for the 21st century and the venom of the dissidents can be silenced. We can then move forward with the civilised society we all deserve.
