The Five Demands

Vi riporto la traduzione di un articolo/riflessione pubblicato dal Belfast Telegraph, a voi le conclusioni.

E ‘ovvio, che qualunque sia la forza delle bande di dissidenti repubblicani bande,  hanno comunque la capacità di causare gravi disagi alla vita normale, in Irlanda del Nord. La serie di sequestri, incendi e allarmi bomba a Belfast e poi a Lurgan, hanno mostrato un certo grado di pianificazione e un gran numero di partecipanti.
E’ stata una preoccupante dimostrazione di forza, innescata dall’insistenza della polizia e dei politici nel sostenere che i dissidenti sono molto limitati numericamente e che non possono contare su un largo sostegno.
E’ stata una dimostrazione di come essi siano disposti a usare estrema violenza, se necessario. Questo è stato più evidente nelle recenti uccisioni di due soldati (britannici) e un ufficiale di polizia, e nel corso dell’ondata dei sequestri di ieri, quando un conducente è stato irrorato di benzina mettendo a rischio la sua vita e un altro è stato minacciato di essere ucciso, se egli non avesse eseguito gli ordini dei dirottatori. Alcune vittime dei dirottamenti sarebbero stati anche derubitati e insultati.
Il risultato è stata una situazioni di stallo che ha paralizzato Belfast per diverse ore e una grande propaganda per i gruppi terroristici responsabili.
Essi hanno riportato il discorso su di un tema che tutti speravano di aver consegnato al passato – la violenza per le strade delle nostre città e paesi.  Mentre  vi è praticamente unanime condanna politica dei dissidenti  – che di per sé, è la più chiara dimostrazione di quanto questa provincia abbia registrato progressi negli ultimi anni – è evidente che vi è ancora una schiera di repubblicani intenta a causare danni o peggio.
Non è assolutamente appetibile alla popolazione questa sorta di distruzione vista per le strade di Belfast e Lurgan, due sere fa.
In questo momento le persone sono preoccupate per le loro prospettive di lavoro, la loro capacità finanziaria e per quale sarà il futuro economico. La violenza per le strade, anche se palesemente di un piccolo gruppo di dissidenti, è una distrazione che nessuno vuole.
Si tratta anche di una immagine negativa per coloro che cercano di vendere la provincia come un terreno fertile in cui investire.
Queste sono le parole che sono state scritte più volte durante alcuni dei giorni più bui dei Troubles. E’ chiaro che i recenti avvenimenti hanno le loro radici in quei giorni, probabilmente orchestrate da persone che erano attivisti in passato.
Purtroppo, però,  si sta cercando di attirare una nuova generazione di giovani nella loro violenza, nel perseguimento di obiettivi irraggiungibili.
Quello che la gente si aspetta  ora è che la polizia e servizi di intelligence agiscano con fermezza per arginare i dissidenti il più rapidamente possibile.
Le persone, inoltre, devono dimostrare la propria solidarietà con la polizia, fornendo loro tutte le informazioni che potrebbero portare all’arresto e alla detenzione dei responsabili dei recenti episodi di violenza.
Nella nuova Irlanda del Nord, la polizia si aspetta, e dovrebbe ottenere, la piena collaborazione dei cittadini nella caccia ai criminali.
Più i dissidenti sono in grado di dimostrare le loro capacità, maggiore è il rischio che le persone più sbagliate siano invogliate ad entrare tra i loro ranghi. Si tratta di una prospettiva troppo terrificante da contemplare.

Dissidents prey on the misguided (Belfast Telegraph)
It is obvious, whatever the strength of the dissident republican gangs, that they have the capability of causing quite severe disruption to normal life in Northern Ireland. The series of hijackings, burnings and bomb alerts in Belfast and later in Lurgan showed a degree of planning and quite a large number of participants.
It was a worrying show of strength, given the insistence of police and politicians that the dissidents are very small in number and in support.
What is also showed was that they are prepared to use extreme violence if necessary. This was most obvious in the recent killings of two soldiers and a police officer, but during yesterday’s spate of hijackings, one driver was doused in petrol and put in mortal fear for his life and another was threatened with being shot if he did not carry out the hijackers’ orders. There were also reports that some hijacking victims were robbed, adding insult to injury.
The net result of the orchestrated mayhem was gridlock in parts of Belfast for several hours and a big publicity boost for the terrorist groups responsible.
They have got the public talking about the one subject that everyone had hoped was consigned to the past — violence on the streets of our towns and cities. While there is virtually unanimous political condemnation of the dissident terrorists — that in itself is the clearest demonstration of how far this province has progressed in recent years — it is obvious there is still a disaffected republican rump intent on causing mischief or worse.
There is absolutely no public appetite for the
sort of destruction seen on the streets of Belfast and Lurgan two evenings ago.
At this time people are concerned about their job prospects, their financial standing and what the future holds economically. Violence on the streets, even if demonstrably from a very small group of dissidents, is a distraction that nobody wants.
It is also a negative image for those trying to sell the province as an investment location for when the global economic upturn does eventually arrive.
These are words which were written repeatedly during some of the darkest days of the Troubles. It is clear that recent events have their roots in those days, probably masterminded by people who were active terrorists in the past.
Sadly, they are trying to suck a new generation of young people into their evil ways in pursuit of unachievable aims.
What the public now expects is for the police and the intelligence services to clamp down hard on the dissidents to render them as ineffective as quickly as possible.
The public must also show its solidarity with the police by giving them any information which could lead to the arrest and imprisonment of those responsible for recent violence.
In the new Northern Ireland, the police expect, and should get, the full co-operation of the public in hunting down criminals.
The longer the dissidents are able to demonstrate their capabilities, the greater the risk that more misguided people will be drawn to their ranks. That is a prospect too terrifying to contemplate.
