Arms find ‘linked to dissidents’ (BBC News)
An arms cache found near the border with Donegal belonged to dissident republicans, an MLA has said.
Irish police found two suspected pipe bombs, four pistols, two revolvers and two sawn-off shotguns in Carrigans near Londonderry on Saturday.
SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey said he was “relieved” lethal weapons had been “taken out of dissident hands”.
No arrests have been made. Irish police said the find was a major blow to criminals operating in the border area.
They also said the find could be linked to an armed robbery at the post office in Carrigans on Friday.
Donegal TD Joe McHugh said there were not enough police operating in border towns and villages, and said Carrigans’ proximity to Derry made it vulnerable to city crime levels.
“It’s an ordinary wee village but the unfortunate thing is it’s very close to the fourth largest city in Ireland, and that being the case, it’s not reflected in the adequate provision of garda resources.
“Derry City should be treated in the same light as Limerick City, Cork City or Galway City, where satellite villages and towns have an increased level of resources in terms of garda provision,” he said.
