Dungiven man jailed over sectarian graffiti on school (BBC News Northern Ireland)

A man from Dungiven, County Londonderry, has been jailed for daubing sectarian slogans on a primary school in Limavady.

Brendan Nicholson, 27, was jailed for four months after admitting the offence, which occurred on 20 May 2012.

Limavady Magistrates Court was told that police received a report of two males being seen at Drumachose Primary School.

Slogans about the IRA, the Queen and Celtic were painted on to the building.

Nicholson, from Foreglen Road in Dungiven, was stopped some distance away and was found to have paint on his hands and clothes and a bottle of white spirits in his pocket.

When cautioned about the offence he said “IRA forever.”

District Judge Liam McNally said it appeared to him to be “a case of aggravated hostility”.

A defence solicitor said that it was a “very serious matter”.

He said his client was “not a man who was politically motivated” and that Nicholson was intoxicated at the time.

Judge McNally told Nicholson: “You say that you are not sectarian or a bigot, but you are in fact a bigot.”

The judge said: “The law allows for a more serious sentence in cases of aggravated hostility.”
