Pipe bomb attack could have killed police (NewsLetter)

A pipe bomb thrown at officers in Derry last night was designed to seriously injure or kill, the city’s area commander has said.

Several homes were evacuated after the device was thrown at a police vehicle in Charlotte Street in the Long Tower area shortly after 10pm on Tuesday.

A security alert, during which Army Technical Officers examined the scene, lasted until late this morning when residents returned to their homes.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said: “It was viable pipe bomb, army technical officers described it as a device capable of causing serious injury or death. Thankfully it didn’t detonate.”

He added that the device was “crude” but that it was viable and had caused “massive disruption”. “People were out of their homes last night, Mass was disrupted this morning, schools disrupted a nursery disrupted.”

He said local people “are absolutely disgusted” by the fact that “there are people trying to drag the headlines into being about fear and murder”.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Chief Inspector Burrows appealed for members of the public with any information they believe may be of use to the investigation to come forward. “It’s really important that members of the community tell us anything they know,” he said.
