PSNI NUOVAMENTE SOTTO TIRO AL NORD
Police attacked for third night (UTV)
Police have been attacked with petrol bombs during a third successive night of trouble, although this time sporadic, across parts of Northern Ireland.
Rioting broke out on Wednesday night in the Garvaghy Road area of Portadown, damaging police and civilian vehicles.
Although missiles – including petrol bombs and paint bombs – were thrown, no officers were injured during the disorder.
A 21-year-old man was arrested for riotous behaviour, while a young girl arrested for disorderly behaviour was later released pending reports.
According to the PSNI, officers liaised with community representatives to restore calm.
In north Belfast, a petrol bomb was thrown at Tennent Street police station in the Shankill area – but it failed to ignite.
There was also an attempted hijacking.
Petrol bombs were also thrown at police in the Springfield and Suffolk Road areas of west Belfast, while officers were attacked with stones at Eastbridge in the east of the city.
South Belfast saw minor trouble and a bin was set alight at Cromwell Road.
Petrol bombs were again used in the Brandywell and Gobnascale areas of Londonderry, while cars were damaged in the Mourneview Park and Canal Quay areas of Newry.
Minor trouble also saw bins set alight in Larne.
Police, political and church leaders, and community representatives have repeatedly called for cool heads to prevail as clean-up operations continue.
