Ecco la versione integrale della dichiarazione rilasciata dalla famiglia McDaid agli organi di stampa.

“Vogliamo esprimere il nostro ringraziamento a tutti coloro che hanno offerto il loro sostegno e espresso condoglianze, sia a livello locale e che da più lontano.
Questa è stata una fonte di grande forza per la famiglia.
Vorremmo estendere i nostri più sinceri ringraziamenti anche al sensibile personale del Causeway Hospital e per la maestria con cui hanno soccorso il nostro amato Kevin in seguito al feroce attacco non provocato e che ha portato alla sua morte.
Questo è un periodo estremamente difficile per la nostra famiglia. Abbiamo sofferto l’improvvisa e tragica perdita di un marito e di un padre.
L’angoscia per la perdita di  Kevin è stata accresciuta dalla natura brutale della sua morte, ucciso sulla porta di casa sua di fronte alla sua famiglia.
L’indagine di polizia sull’omicidio di Kevin è in una fase iniziale e non si vuole pregiudicare l’inchiesta, facendo qualsiasi commento formale in relazione alla stessa.
La famiglia è grata ai membri del PSNI che hanno cercato di prestare un primo soccorso a Kevin dopo questo terribile attacco nonostante fosse morente ai nostri piedi.
Ci appelliamo a tutte le persone per assistere in qualunque modo possibile la polzia, nelle indagini su questo omicidio e sull’aggressione di Damien Fleming.
Le persone coinvolte in questo attacco omicida avvenuto in Somerset Drive domenica sera, non meritano alcuna forma di protezione, non sono amici di alcuna comunità.
La famiglia sta facendo una denuncia formale al Police Ombudsman.
Abbiamo apprezzato che il Chief Constable di sua spontanea volontà, abbia già riferito sulla questione al Police Ombudsman per le indagini.
La famiglia desidera mettere in chiaro che è preoccupata per il fatto che, domenica 24 maggio 2009, il PSNI sia stato coinvolto in negoziati con una serie di persone della comunità lealista.
La famiglia è preoccupata per quanto riguarda la natura di questi negoziati e la conseguente affermazione che le minacce di queste persone fossero giunte alla polizia e fosse stata avvertita delle violenze che ne sarebbero derivate, salvo che le richieste inoltrate venissero rispettate.
Si tratta di un principio fondamentale di una società civile il fatto che persone come queste non debbano dettare i termini di legge e di ordine.
Siamo inoltre turbati perchè, data la conoscenza preventiva della minaccia, né noi né i nostri vicini siano stati adeguatamente protetti dalla polizia.
Vogliamo che la comunità sostenga le forze di polizia, ma anche che la polizia sostenga la comunità.
A seguito di questo atroce omicidio e data la gravità delle condizioni di Damien Fleming, le tensioni rimangono estremamente elevate.
Un’ulteriore minaccia di morte è stata compiuta contro la nostra famiglia.
Non dovrebbe essere questa l’eredità della morte di Kevin.
Non è ciò che egli avrebbe voluto.
Kevin ha vissuto per aiutare gli altri.
La sua breve vita è stata spesa cercando di colmare il divario che esiste nella nostra comunità.
La sua morte per mano di persone che non hanno nulla da offrire alla nostra comunità, non dovrebbe annullare una vita di lavoro.
I media e la stampa che hanno frequentato la nostra casa e che hanno contattato, sono stati cortesi e rispettosi.
Siamo molto grati per la loro gentilezza.
La famiglia tuttavia desidera non ci siano altri contatti da parte dei mezzi di comunicazione e che ci permettano di vivere il nostro dolore in pace.
Questo è un momento estremamente difficile e chiediamo gentilmente che i nostri desideri vengano rispettati”.

“We would like to express our thanks to all those who have offered their support and condolences both locally and from further afield.
“This has been a source of enormous strength to the family.
“We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of the Causeway Hospital for the sensitive and expert way in which they dealt with our beloved Kevin in the aftermath of the vicious and unprovoked attack which led to his death.
“This is an extremely difficult time for our family.
“We have suffered the sudden and tragic loss of a husband and father.
“The anguish of Kevin’s loss has been heightened by the brutal nature of his death; murdered on his doorstep in front of his family.
“The police investigation into Kevin’s murder is at an early stage and we do not wish to prejudice that investigation, by making any formal comment in relation to same.
“The family are grateful to members of the PSNI who attended to Kevin after this horrific assault and who attempted to administer CPR as he lay dying at our feet.
“We would appeal to all persons to assist the police investigation into this murder and the attack on Damien Fleming in whatever way possible.
“The people involved in this murderous attack and who entered Somerset Drive on Sunday night do not deserve any form of protection, nor are they friends of any community.
“The family are making a formal complaint to the Police Ombudsman.
“We are appreciative that of his own volition the Chief Constable has already referred this matter to the Police Ombudsman for investigation.
“The family wish to make it clear that they are concerned that the PSNI were involved in negotiations with a number of persons perceived to be from the Loyalist community on Sunday the 24th of May 2009.
“The family are concerned regarding the nature of these negotiations and the attendant claim that threats were made by individuals from this background to police that violence would ensue unless certain demands made by them were met.
“It is a fundamental tenet of a civilised society that individuals such as these should not dictate the terms of law and order.
“We are further concerned that given the prior knowledge of the threat, neither we and nor our neighbours were not properly protected by police.
“We want the community to support the police, but equally police must also support the community.
“In the aftermath of this heinous murder and given the fragility of Mr Fleming’s condition, tensions remain extremely high.
“A further death threat has also been made against our family.
“This should not be the legacy of Kevin’s death.
“It is not what he would have wanted.
“Kevin lived helping others.
“His short life was spent trying to bridge the divide that exists in our community.
“His death at the hands of people who have nothing to offer our community should not be allowed to undo his life’s work.
“The media and press who have attended our family home and contacted ourselves have been courteous and respectful.
“We are most grateful for their kindness.
“The family would however wish that there should be no further media contact and we be allowed to grieve quietly in peace.
“This is an enormously difficult time and we would ask kindly that those wishes should be respected.”
