Eight charged over Coleraine murder (NewsLetter)
Eight men have been charged in connection with the sectarian murder of Kevin McDaid.
The males – with ages ranging from 18 to 50 – will appear before Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Eight men have been charged with murder, attempted murder and assault, according to a police spokesperson.
A ninth man is charged with affray.
Another man has been released on police bail, she added.
Kevin McDaid was beaten to death by a loyalist mob on Sunday in the Heights area of Coleraine.
Another man, Damien Fleming, remains in a critical condition in hospital.
Meanwhile, a flute band has agreed to re-route a parade scheduled for Friday away from the scene of the sectarian murder.
Pride of the Bann members said that they took the decision to ease community tensions in the town.
The move has been welcomed by the Parades Commission and local politicians.
However, a band spokesman said they were furious they had been “dragged into” the row.
“It is with great sadness and no small degree of anger that Pride of the Bann Flute resent the way they have become embroiled in a controversy,” he said.
“The band feels that calls to cancel the evening are motivated by certain political agendas.”
This parade had been planned over 12 months ago.
“We offered this move in the interests of community relations and to ease tensions in the town. Pride of the Bann feel this is an appropriate gesture and one which they hope will be taken as a sincere attempt to ease any community tensions.”
Chairman of the Parades Commission, Roger Poole, said he welcomed he move.
“The commission was strongly of the view that had the parade gone ahead as notified there was the potential for further deterioration in community relations in Coleraine and indeed across Northern Ireland,” he said.
“The parade organiser has taken recent events into account and the commission welcomes the steps they have taken to alleviate tension ahead of the parade.”
Mr Poole appealed for everyone concerned with the parade to approach the weekend in a calm and peaceful manner.
Local unionist councillor David McClarty praised the band for showing “true leadership”.
The UUP man said: “The Pride of the Bann obviously recognise the tense situation there is and have done an admirable thing by voluntarily rerouting the parade.
“I think the community will thank them for that.
“Had the parade itself been forcibly banned by the Parades Commission it would have exacerbated the situation.”
